I'm hoping this isn't a stupid question...
How do I know if my Tie rod ends are bad by looking at them? Is there some way to test them or do I have to pull them to notice wear? I think they need replaced because of my death wobble and I've already replaced stabilizer, but I know that's just hiding something else. dkr [TJ] 3" sl, 1" bl, 33" Super Swampers, Banks powered. |

Hard to tell by looking at them. They will help cause death wobble if they are worn. If you've got over 60k miles on your jeep then its probably time.
Easiest way to tell is to pop one of them loose (take off the castle nut and remove the rod end from the knuckle/pitman arm. Then move the end by hand, if it wobbles around then its time for a new one. Also check the Track bar for 'tightness' and if you are running an aftermarket bar (or even the stock one) you might want to check out the ends on that also. Thanks- will do. I'm sure that's the cause because I have some play in my track bar too.
I only have wobble from 40-45mph. It's REALLY bad for that 5 mph, but once I'm past it, the jeep drives fine. Does anything else come to mind that might cause wobble only in that speed range? dkr [TJ] 3" sl, 1" bl, 33" Super Swampers, Banks powered. |

40 to 45 is also the approximate range of out of balance wheels causing major vibes if I recall correctly. That may be contributing by setting up the initial vibration harmonics. Might help to get your wheels balanced?!?

I'm sure you're right, I'm running Trxus 33s and one of them nearly took a lb of wheel weight to get balanced out. I did have some 31 inch revos on before that though, and they did the same thing. Even if that's the case would a stronger tie rod and ends help?

I got the centramatic balancers and replaced the tire that took nearly a pound of weight and it still does it at 40 mph. Next up is the track bar - I've been told I don't need adjustable with only 3" of lift but I'm going to try it because this is definately a wobble. Had the TRE's checked and they were all good. I've been pretty sure it was the track bar, but I keep getting told it's not. I'll post back once I get my adj.

check your driveline angles too, if you dented your belly skid plate it can push them up just enough to cause some vibes

Well, my skid isn't dented, but I do have about a half inch drop on the skid plate because I haven't installed my SYE yet. I'm sure that's responsible for some vibes, but would it affect my steering??
