Hi all,

Looking for some advice if you please.

I am getting what sounds like a dry bearing noise up front. Took accessory belt off and found that the A/C compressor Clutch pulley is a little wobbly. I'm assuming there should be no play in this part.

If this is likely to be the source of the noise, is it possible to change a bearing in there.
If it is,how is the free wheeling hub held while the retaining nut is loosened.

While the belt was off i noticed a little play in the belt tensioner pulley as well. Is the bearing a replaceable part?
Many thanks, advice very much appreciated.

Dave.

I know this might be a little off subject but i hear a "dry" bearing noise from my t-case front output shaft, or it sounds like a bunch of marbles in there. Any idea what it could be? or what size the the allen head for draining it?

The front cv joint in stock tj driveshafts tends to make that noise. Just grease the cv joint, and see where it gets u.

Got to the bottom of the noise issue up front. The noise had become unbearable so had to be done.

Sure enough the A/C compressor clutch bearing was shot. Managed to get a replacement assembly shipped to UK from Jeeps are Us, fraction of the price over here, and quicker.

Little bit tricky to do without removing compressor but managed it all the same. Saved a lot of fiddling by removing the radiator expansion tank, the fan and cowling. A mirror came in useful too enabling me to get a good look at the snap ring holding the pulley on. Pretty straight forward job.

While I was at it I put a new bearing in the idler roller, very easy job, and put a new bearing in the tensioner pulley. That was a little bit delicate as the pulley is plastic and I don't think Jeep intended this to be replaceable. Job done anyway.

End result - Running sweet as a nut. Really pleased.

UK Dave,

Glad you got that fixed pretty easy! By the way, did you ever do the axle replacement?

Thanks,
Mark

Since you brought this up from the grave, I solved my bearing noise too. When I changed my fluid a month ago the tcase fluid was black and only had a quart left in it. When I filled it up all the noises were gone!

Hi Squid,
It's great to have the engine running sweet again. Unfortunately the axles had to be put on the back burner for a while due to purchasing a pickup as a work vehicle and runaround so finances became a little stretched. But the dust has settled a little now and I am starting to look at the project again.
Did you get your axles done, how about the solonoids, hope all went to plan. Would be very interested to know how you got on.

Unicycle, pleased you got that one figured, thinking of changing all my oils. The TJ has only done 24K miles so not sure if it's a premature or not. It has been over a year since it's last dealer service too, but I've done little mileage in that tim. I've noticed that the gear change has become a little notchy lately so an oil change may not be a bad thing anyway.

Cheers guys,

Dave.
