Just got the 44's F&R. I am wondering if anyone has some easy suggestions on how to set up the steering. Rockram, I think you have the Scout set up, right? How do you have your steering? Anyone else have any input? Secondly, did you keep Scout discs, or did you swap them to something more common?

Thanks!

BigBird, I went with a 73 chevy axle because it was easier to convert. I narrowed it to scout width to match the rear. As for steering I went high steer and had the right side milled. Also the chevy knuckles have the tierod out in front. I used this to mount my tierod and my draglink goes to the right side and i'm going to put the ram assist to the left side. I'll try to post some pics if I can figure out how to do it. Oh yes my tierod and draglink are 1.5 x .25 wall DOM. I don't think there going anywhere.

I'm setting up a chevy front end now we Orderd the steering arms from OTT industries with the 2.5 lift for the tie rod and drag link. There is a lot of clearance for the leaf springs now. For a Quick Fix you can do a Inverted Y like a TJ steering. Check out the GM tie rod ends and see what you can mix together.

I was hoping the Y set up would be more than a quick fix...

360 the Scout front end has 0 caster and to go SOA you have a lot of grinding to do. I thought it would be more work to go Scout rather than narrow the Chev. Plus the Chevy is already SOA. We cut the welds at the knuckles knocked them off with BFH cut the axle tubes to the proper length put the inner C's back on set the caster to 6 deg. then welded the C's back on. After getting everything put back together and aligned I can run 70mph let go the steering and she tracks perfectly down the road.

I've got the Scout 44's front and rear on my yj. I too went with the chevy/ford outers, spindles, brakes etc. My steering is similar to Rockram's except my tie rod and drag link are over the top of my leaf springs. He is right about the grinding. I don't know if it is "more" work than shortening the full width axles, but it was a lot to get the pinion angle up and the knuckles rotated back. I feel I got it right since it tracks great on the highway at any speed. I got the parts I needed from Parts Mike back before he even had a website. http://www.partsmikeparts.com/ He is a great guy and very helpful. He walked me through it all since I hadn't ever done it. It was back in 1996 before it was so common. Definately worth it to be safe again.
