Well I'm getting a lift and tires for the Rubi finally. I think I'm going with some SSR's sized 305x75-16 on my stock wheels. My question is how do these tires handle on road? My Rubi is not really a daily driver, but it does see a fair amount of pavement. I've read some reviews that say SSR's are fairly quite, even comparable to mud tires like BFG's. I know the tread is going to be a bit softer and will not get as many miles from the tires, but that doesn't bother me too much. I'm just looking for some feedback from owners or people who have any experience with the SSR's to give me an idea of what to expect and what not to expect the tire to do. Thanks.

the main question you need to ask yourself is what type of wheeling do you do??

For a Daily Driver (unless I was driving alot in the mud) I would go with the Goodyear MTR.

I have had pretty much anything, Swamper ssr's, MTR;s, Maxxis Creepy Crawlers, BFG Ats, MT/s, etc..

I found the Swampers the WORST of the bunch, maybe I just had a bad set, but even with the radials, I couldnt keep them balanced, and they were really loud, If you were going to go with an INTERCO brand tire, I would go with the truxxus for a daily driver, If you want a good all-around tire I would go with the MTR for daily driver and if you want a more hardcore tire, I really Like my Creepy Crawlers..

They are a good all around agressive tire, rocks, mud, street manners etc. But the sidewalls plain suck! I blew out a sidewall on one of my 37s

I'm with zjmike on the Creepy Crawlers...I've had General MTs & Goodyear MTRs but I like the Creepy Crawlers best.

Thanks for all your replies. I checked out the Creepy Crawlers and dig them. Unfortunately they didn't have my size listed on Maxxis' web site. Also zjmike, aren't Creepy's a bias tire? Don't bias tires suck as far as street driving...flat spots, noisy, and hard to balance? I've heard other people also say that the sidewalls on SSR's aren't that great. It seems that most of them are running taller tires though. So on a 33" tire where there is less sidewall, do you think they might hold up better? Can't you tell I'm looking for any excuse to get the SSR's? I really dig the looks and I love Jeepin with Swampers. Somebody just needs to tell me they're awesome and to buy them.

If u want the maxxis tires why dont u go with the 35x12.50.16s cause the 305x75-16s are a 34x12 that is on the intercotire web site under calculator. well it was just my 2 cents just trying to help Smile

I'm running 35x14.50x15 SSRs' and really like them. So much so that I'll get them again when these wear out. I actually did my build up around the tires. Noisy? I don't think so at all, even with the top off. Most tell me they can't believe how quiet they are. I have BFG MTs' on my wife's TJ and they are usually louder and they're only 31x10.50. The SSR does require a lot of weight to get it balanced but they do balance out fine. Something you have to deal with though is that if you loose a piece of rubber off one of the lugs, it will many times be enough to require rebalancing. So after I got beadlocks, I had the tires balanced then added Equal and they run smooth all the way up to 75mph which is as fast as I've taken it.
A taller tire at lower air pressure will put more side wall out for damage but I haven't lost a sidewall yet.
Now with that said, is the SSR the best tire on the market? I have to say no, but it also depends on how you want to use them, however they're a great compromise for the wheeling I do and are the best tire for me. I have about 28,000 miles on these with about 50% tread left.
If you really like the SSRs', go for it. You won't be making a bad choice. They do look pretty cool and are very tough.

We go to Mineral Basin in American Fork Cyn all the time. We also go to 5-mile pass, nutty-putty(little moab), Hardware Ranch east of Logan, The Pony Express Trail, and the rest of the time to Moab. The 21st is the Utah Four Wheel Drive Association's summer convention and it's going to be up around Logan so we'll be there for that.

I've had the SSR's in 2 sizes a 31x10.5 and the most recent set in a 35x12.5 and I love them granted they do have a soft sidewall that's why you buy a spare and if you get them from 4wheel parts get the road hazard warrenty so when you cut a sidewall they replace it free. To get them balanced dump a tube of BB's in each tire about 8oz and they act like a centrafuge to balance the tire then when you loose a chunk of tire no problem as your balance moves to the light side of the tire. The only down side of this is when you stop you can hear the bb's hit your wheels.

Not the radial versions......which the SSR's are. I dont have any experience running the SSRs, but i've been running the TSL Radials for years and each set i've run, i've gotten over 40k miles out of them with tread to spare when i got rid of them.

I've talked to guy's who have put 25 to 30,000 miles on set of SSR's personally I don't know as mine stays on the trail more than the street however on the occasion that I do take it to town it is a pleasure to drive. IMO I do better on the rocks than the guys with the swamper tsl's due to the siping, I get more grip.

Thanks for all the responses guys. I'm not sure about the BB trick. Sounds a little crazy. Well it sounds like the SSR's are a pretty decent tire. Good to know. Off this subject, here are some pics of last weekend in Moab. We ran Hell's Revenge and Golden Spike. Labor Day Weekend
