Why mess with the 700r4? you've alread got an OD auto in the ZJ right? It should also just bolt up to the 241OR, pretty sure the R4 will need an adapter for that.

The 241OR is also BIG.. hope there is enough room under the tunnel for that.

What engine? I'm not exactly sure which tranny you've got. with the 4.0L it might be the 40-30LE/AW4 or the new one they stuck in the wranglers. I know the wrangler one gets bad reviews because of its sluggish programming and high od. Are you happy with the shifting currently?

looks like you've probably got a 42RE. Haven't heard anything bad about them. (but then again I don't hang out in the ZJ circles).

Ratios aren't a whole lot different than the 700R4:
42RE 2.74 1.54 1.00 0.69
700R4 3.06 1.62 1.00 0.70

I would think the 42RE would be a little more streatable with the slightly higher 1st and 2nd.OD is about the same.

Its also shifted by the ZJ computer. Removing it for a hydralic tranny (700R4) might confuse the heck out of the computer.

Seen some stuff about poor 2-3 shifting and excessive wear. Most likely due to poor maint on the tranny. These things (like my TF999) really need the chrysler spec ATF +4 (or redline's +C) fluid and not the normal stuff. Its a little slicker than normal ATF, probably helps reduce band wear a little.

The 4 speed OD transmission in its stock form has some flaws. The over drive unit on the aft end is poorly lubricated. My ZJ's OD unit started making metal due to this problem. This is corrected by drilling out the main shft its connected to. It requires a special drill due to the hardened shaft.
Also the over drive unit and aft clutch packs can be beefed up by adding more clutch disc's. I also recomend a Transgo shift kit installed.
The torque converter can also be strengthened by adding kevlar clutch disc's.
Tourist transmissions her in SLC did mine in our 97' ZJ. Best shifting ZJ I've ever driven.

I had a 96 zj with the 6 and auto, had 3 trans within 150,000 miles, and always shifted poorly.
