Well, I've found another source for compound gears.

It comes as a set of 6 compound gears and 5 pinion gears. Not bad for $3.50 + shipping from Hong Kong.

I guess they're used on the Kyosho Mini-Z, whatever that is.

They're made from injection molded Delrin.

We'd have to replace the post-mounted scheme with a shaft-mount and side plates.
