This deserves surely new a (( TOPIC ))

##############################################

Sorry nothing NB to report but maybe you all would be interested in seeing the next "phase" of my WK project.

Here is a sneak peek at my new chassis I'm making out of aluminum. This is the rear end. Still a loooong way to go buy you get the picture. The bottom links are only threaded rod at this point (for ease of setup) and the Al has not been polished yet but I am quite happy so far.

Cheers and hope you don't mind the WK content!!!

Sean

SEAND, still made to you very good work on your crawlers.

And moreover, that always was of clean work.

Thank you to announce us your work.

Thanks Tex:

I'm trying to figure out what to make the lower links out of now - aluminum, HDP (High Density Polyethylene) or brakeline/threaded rod combo.

HDP is very slippery but I am not sure it will bend too much.

Aluminum is strong and light but I am not sure about its ability to slip over the rocks.

Brakeline/rod combo: Been there and done that a lot of times. I want to try something new.

I may go with the aluminum cut square (not rounded) to match the upper link. It will be more work but what the hay!!!

Will keep you updated.

Sean

SeanD, nice looking frame there.

"Aluminum is strong and light but I am not sure about its ability to slip over the rocks."
I use plastic tubing for pnumatics at work. This stuff may be slippery enough to slip over the aluminum rod.
Just a thought.

nice work Sean !!

Any plans for a "winter" pass time ??, or are you running the WK in the snow ? ........... just curious..

I think I may go bug-nuts without some out-door action, even if it is -20 or whatever..

they are probably too large - you will have to re-size them to get them on here -

if you are using windows grab this power toy to resize

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

look down right hand side of page for

Image Resizer

once you have it loaded - just right-click one or a group of pics and choose re-size from the menu... small / medium / large

hope that helps Smile

( sorry posted wrong link earlier - right one now )

I managed to get some work done on one set of lower links (I got home from my bball game at 11:00 and headed straight to the shed to get some work done) I cut the links from 1/4 aluminum plate. Tapped the ends for 4-40 rod and used Traxxas rod ends. I put them on but have not done any final fitting - shaping of the stays so they look a little rough.

Its 12:30 in the AM and I'm going to sit back and enjoy a beer.

As for winter projects - I should've waited to do this chassis then so that I wouldn't mind the downtime on my crawler. But once I get an idea in my head there's no stopping. I don't like snow crawling - doesn't have the same appeal to me. Sorry no vids - my old digicam has video capability but very low res and too hard to set up to use.

That's all for now.

Nice work Sean.

Its actually very similar to a chassis I`m building for the N/B.

Thanks all. Got some more work done again tonight (my bball game was over by 9:30 so I got a little extra time in tonight) I made the second set of lower links and popped them on. I put everyhting back together loosely to see how it all looks. I am going to go with a droop setup but I haven't done anything with the shocks yet. Its 12:30 AM (again) and I'm too tired to go any further.

Notice how the motor and tranny are laid on their side? While it does place the motor outside the frame it gives a very low CG. I can hardly wait to see how it works.

One thing happened in my design though - my WB grew by 1 inch to 13.5. This is not a big deal as this is not a comp rig anyway (I have 4 wheel steering as well)

Outta here,

Sean

Those upper links are bad a$$. What did you use to cut them out?

Thanks Flapding. I took a jigsaw, flipped it upside down and clamped it in the jaws of a 30 yr old B&D workbench. I drilled a few strategic "access" holes in the tighter radii that would be hard to cut by saw. The I fed the aluminunim through like scroll saw. I just roughed them out and did a fair bit of filing. Then I tapped the ends for 4-40 rods for the rod ends. Quite ghetto but it works.

I can't wait to mount the motor/trans tonight. Should be quite straighforward. I did some tweaking with my shocks later last night and preoladed them to hell using some plastic hose around the shafts. It gives me hope that the stock shocks may actually be usable (for now at least). I am still thinking on using internal springs but will decide later.

Cheers,
Sean

Marmech:

4WS is the cat's a$$. I have mine running off a third channel switch on my TQ3 TX so I only use it when needed. Makes a big difference in tight spots when you need a tigher turning radius. Looks cool too!! Well worth the effort!!

As for the Losi Rock Claws, I can't say enough good things about them. When I first put them on I thought, Gee these things ain't that great. Then after they got scuffed up a bit and I guess the production oils wore off, they grip like an SOB. I'm climbing things I thought impossible. I am hoping that combining these tires with the lower CG of my new chassis will bring me to a new level of crawling (fingers crossed!!!) I am only running the stock foams now - thought about the Kreepy faoms but they are pretty expen$ive

Cheers,
Sean

Have any of you guys ever fit a different tire onto the NB rims? I`m looking at either the Losi RockClaw or Axial RockLizards to put on mine. I`m leaning towards the Lizards because they`re slightly taller. Comparing dimensions to the NB, both are about the same. I`m going to get them anyways, just wondering if anyone has done it yet and could give some input.

SeanD i have to agree fws is the bomb i love it on my wheely king. As for kreepy foams they are worth the money. Make sure to get the ruby reds. they are super slow reacting. which is great on the rocks. all i need to do is drill maybe two air holes in my rims to see if that will effect them at all and make them a little bit easier to compress. Also i need to buy some stick on weights. Also how are the junfacs holding up i might have to scrap my axials cause i'm spinning a hex in one of the rims now its only a matter of time before the rest go. And i definetly am thinking about gettin some of those losi rockclaws they look awsome.

Ksully:

the Junfacs are working out great - never had a bead come loose yet. I drilled a hole in each rim and it made a world of difference.

I got my crawler back together again tonight with the new chassis. Works great around the house but its 12:30 AM and I'm not going to bother going outside right now.

The reassembly went without a hitch. I refilled my shocks with Wynns Engine Stop Leak (super thick) for better "floatability". I put on an electronics board/cross member. I drilled a bunch of holes in it so that I could use cable ties to hold down the ESC and RX. Works like a charm. I centered my motor a little bit more than most people using this chassis design, too.

Phatchantz asked me what my winter project will be and I've decided that it will be a total disassembly of this chassis so that I can polish the aluminum. I am not going to do it now because I've been off the rock too long already.

That's all for now. I'm going to enjoy a cold beer and head off to bed. Here's a few snaps from tonight:

yeah man, the rear steer is possibly the best thing i did to the clodbuster, and at a +15inch wheelbase i needed it!

ksully, ive stripped all four of my thorns, what i did was i added steel putty instead of CA glue so i could easily remove them still, works great, super solid, not a chance in hell they would slip again
