On some of the steering servo swaps nobody mentioned if they have been able to come up with a return to center setup. It's a shame the steering is all or nothing on these. Kind of ghetto. Has anyone had luck with self centering steering upgrades?

Yeah, my steering seems to be getting weaker and weaker too and I've only driven this thing a few times. Granted I push it VERY hard but a few runs shouldn't be enough to show wear. I've been on the hunt to see if there are any hobby grade servos that self center mechanically, if I find one I will certainly post the info.

The servo I found centers auto so no worries. Before I changed servos I removed the centering spring anyway to help the stock servo. its really not that bad driving without it. we aint goin a hunnerd miles an hour anyways plenty of time to steer lol.

That's great that they center. I've got some airtronics and futaba servos. What kind did you use and where did you connect the V+, V-
and signal wires?

How funny! I have the EXACT same servo. Its good to see some other old school hobbyists here. All this makes me wish I'd kept my Tamiya Bruiser -OUCH. I guess the only way to get auto centering steering is with a radio component swap. Does anyone know if a transmitter from a different brand (Airtronics) will run the Newbright's esc? If so I might just slap an extra receiver in there and run the servo off that.

I've been having steering problems with both of mine too. So I started thinking that it must be something that is getting worn with use. I've never liked the slight angle that one of the "tierod" keepers was mounted so I just removed the screws holding both the keepers and what do you know....I've got responsive steering on both my jeeps now! Big Grin

Go ahead and give it a try! All you have to do is remove the two screws and move the keepers out of the way. If you don't see an improvement just reinstall.

Happy Trails!!!!

Yep the keepers caused me headaches all the time before I swapped the servo but I found that if you remove em completely the servo has a tendency to jump out of the pocket on the steering arm alot. Although mine was mainly when I was bashing pretty hard terrain.

Both of my keepers are gone, "return to center spring" is gone, steering adjuster is gone, it's just pure servo in there with nothing to get in the way of steering and it just plain sucks. Most of the time it's so underpowered that it cant steer under it own weight. I need a new servo.

I hated that most of the time I had to bump the throttle to get it to turn the wheels. Swap servos its relativly cheap and easy and what a difference it makes.

I'm still trying to figure out if anyone got the wiring worked out to get a hobby grade servo to center when the steering wheel is released. I could do the easy fix of wiring directly to the servo motor but I just don't like the idea of having to manually return it to center. Anyone? Buehler? Buehler?

I had the same problem with my steering, sometimes it woudn't respond, or it would take a few more twists of the controller to work. So I took apart the controller and cleaned the contacts and put a little drop of solder on them. Now it always turns when you ask it to, still not very powerful but much better.
