I'm thinking about putting either a Hurst or B&M shifter in my 4.0 liter YJ. Anyone have any experience with them? I'm wondering if they are worth the money and which one is better.

Thanks

JYCRAWLER,

A short throw shifter reduces the distance that you need to move the shift lever to change gears. It makes shifting quicker and reduces the chance of missing a gear.

I've used short throw shifters in a few cars, but have not used one for a jeep.

YJCRAWLER,

I don't race, but I like to drive fast in dirt and mud. Quicker shifting can be helpful, assuming that either of the aftermarket shifters work as advertised.

I bought the Hurst short throw shifter from Quadratec. It took about two hours to install; most of the time was spent removing and reinstalling the floor plate. Please note that I am not a great mechanic.

The new shifter works well. It takes a little more effort to move, but there is very little play. The shifter is firmly spring loaded for the upshift. I think that will cure missing third gear when I'm in a hurry.

The old shifter travelled 5.25 inches from 1st gear to 2nd. The new shifter moves 4 inches. The Hurst shifter handle is 5 inches further back than the stock shifter.

So far it seems like a better position but it will take a little getting used to. I've been driving YJ's since '87 and I've gotten used to the stock setup. Others may not even notice.

I will need to move my console back or down a little to keep the shifter handle from hitting.

Its worth the money.

I drove a YJ with a short throw...major improvement but not worth the money. Ill stick with the factory shifter.
