I have an 89 yj with 4 inch springs and it is still a spring under. still have stock front axle. I am looking at some hd steering upgrades and I cannot find much info on how to build one. lots for a spring over but I want to keep mine the way it is. I also dont want to spend 9 billion dollors on custom knuckles and lots of fancy parts(k-link etc) I need cheep and simple. I also would like to flip to top of the knuckle to give more clearance. I already have the reamer to open holes in the knuckle. I love my yj but in cases like this I envy the cj guys. $160 at big daddy for all heavy duty stuff for a cj. and a simple bolt on. grrrrrr. Oh I am also on a budget and would like to stay around $200...... or try to..... Can anyone help??? also can you swap in tj steering setup into a yj??? if so I could use an aluminum tie rod...

Im in the same situation as you, the best I have found is actully here on Rockcrawler Do a search for " AXE steering" or "1 Ton Steering" Most the pictures are on a Rubicon, but it will work on a YJ. They use 1 ton Chevy knuckles and HUGE DOM tubing. I will be doing thise to my YJ soon, give me a few min and I'll send you the spec.'s on how to build this steering system yourself. Its about $300 in parts, so its not too bad.

thank u very much.... Big Grin
Also just as a curiosity u ever here of anyone putting tj steering in a yj??? would be a bolt in I think. and then I could use a alumflex tierod............with a heavy duty draglink. and not have to ream anything. would also give me alot more clearance in the middle of axle because of y setup....might be cheaper. and easy. just trying to look at all my options. thanks for the email. Add a high steer arm to the passenger side for the drag link.
Utilize the stock position for the tie rod.
Take 1.5" 1/4 wall DOM and put inserts for the TRE threads. Ream out the pitman arm and knuckle for the larger TRE's. Voila...you made a HD tie rod and drag link.

I considered this, but the measurement from the pitman arm to the passenger side knuckle on a TJ is significantly different from a YJ....so nope, it wont work Roll Eyes

****.... ok so I guess the only thing to do is build a setup with the chevy tre's. wish I could do the same but with a alumiflex rod. I kinda like that concept. takes away allot of shock from the knuckles and tre's hmmmm i wonder does anyone have the length of the tj tierod...just the rod itself prefer the alum one?? maybe I can mate that to the chevy tre? and make a mixed hybrid....or is there anywhere to order one custom length...that would be ideal....

A TJ/XJ tie-rod wont work on a YJ, its WAY too short.

As for the Alumiflex stuff, I dont really like it to tell ya the truth. I know a few guys that ran it and it did end up bending and staying bent, they either went with Currie systems or a Big Daddy's tie-rod.

Hey zongore, drop YjLopes an e-mail. He can tell ya how to make it work on a YJ! That's what he wheels. The rig Renegade is refering to is WillyG's TJ. I've seen hteset up in person, and it lloks great. My YJ may get this dome to it later this summer.

Insane, I'd like to see your set-up too. Compare notes and see what happens! Drop me an e-mail if ya want. But it will be later this year before I do the steering.

This is the old on a HP D44 (Just 1 pass. High steer arm, stock tie rod location)

This is the intermediate on a HPD60 (Double side arms, rear tie rod, front drag link with a hydraulic cylinder)

This is the latest on the same HPD60 (Just moved the cylinder mount off the diff and onto a bridge)

Thanks! Looks stouter than I'll probably ever need. But then over-kill is good! (I run a 31 spline Ford 9 behind my little 4 banger to turn 33's, soon to be 35's)
