I need to replace seats (driver's esp.) in my 91 YJ and was wondering what kind of seats would do? (out of another vehicle I mean) or should I just get the OEM's? My local wrecking yard wants $50/seat and I have to scrounge around and get them out myself but don't know really what I'm looking for. Any suggestions?

Get some seats out of a Lerado Jeep Cherokee (XJ) man are they nice!!!! They seem to hold you in really well like sport seats. I hated the seats in my YJ and then I bought my XJ...ohh the difference.

I've heard that older Mustang seats have the same bolt pattern as Jeep seats. Might want to look into that.

I like my Mastercraft Rubicons too. PRobably the best that I have had. Pricey. About $300 each ordered straight from mastercraft.

I tried to have Mike order them through Rockshop but they, MasterCraft, seemed to be a problem. He suggested that I go throguh someone who was already a dealer for them. As a slightly less costly alternative I might suggest Beard. They are making a seat very similar. I am not sure of the cost and quality but they might be a good choice.

The Rubicon seats are plug and play though and that can be a real timesaver.

Fabbing seats into a Jeep is really no big deal. I have found that the best place to start is with sports cars and Hondas.

I put some Honda Prelude seats in my first 87YJ. They were from a 1988 Prelude.

I put 1991 Honda CRX seats in the next 1987 YJ.

I put Mitubishi Galant seats in a Nissan Truck.

YJLOPES has some Fiero seats in his 1991 YJ. Those come with speakers in the headrests.

The ideal is a seat with as flat a bottom as possible. Easiest to adapt.

Make sure they measure "about" as wide as your Jeep seats. If you have the skinny factory console it is no big deal but the wider Tuffy ones you might have to change if your seats were too wide.

The Honda seats were the best. The added side bolster and lower seating surface were nice for me. Made the Jeep feel much more sporty.

has anyone tried those plastic seats you can get for like $46 from 4wheeldrive hardware then add the padding to. they look uncomfortable but i have never been in one. price seems good if they won't hurt you.

Haven't tried that. Did strap down a folding chair in the back for someone to sit on when I didn't have room for the back seat. At least they had the belt on.

2 weeks with the Bestop Thermal seats and I've been quite impressed. Its nice to still be able to recline the seat. The bolsters are nice and firm, but not overkill for a DD.

Yup, they're heated. Smile

The hookup is REALLY easy. they actually have something that you can plug into where a fuse goes in the box. you put 2 fuses in that, then plug everthing together.

I was a little more anal, and already had an unused link coming out of the fuse box. Ran the wires under the console, drilled 2 holes for the switches in the console, then plugged it together.

Only takes a 7.5 amp fuse, but they get darn warm.

I wonder if they make the seat heaters for the stock seat, or even to adapt to mastercrafts. Be perfect wheelin in the cold with the top and doors off!

I there a company that sells aftermarket seat heaters. The catch is that they will only sell them to upolstery shops.

If you want something that looks like a mastercraft and is heated, checkout www.redart.com . The beard seats there are very similar to the mastercraft setup, you can go cheap or full custom/heated leather through them.

THose beard seats do look nice. IVe had leather seats in my old jeep, not the best for wheelin. I really do like the mastercrafts though, might have to make friends with an aplustry shop.

I actually just got my plastic seats from jegs a couple days ago. They were like 37$ a peice or something. I order two of those and two of the seat covers, they are actuall pretty nice. I do suggest ordering the seat covers. For the 2 seats, and 2 seat covers my total was 172.91! Shipped to my door, they work well, and have a flat bottom, dont buy the seat adapters, just get a 3/16" 14x15.5 peice of steel and drill some holes, the screws that go in them are 5/8". I will buy em' again if the occassion would happen to come up again. Just my $0.02
