my ax-15 is slowly going out, and i want to go to an automatic without haveing to replace my intire jeep...i will be peicing this thing together in the next 3 months so i need an idea of what components would be involved and which auto works best with what i have now...
1991 yj 6cyl d-30 fr 8.8 rr ax-15 np231 with sye(i would like to keep this t-case) if possible.
im rebuilding the 6cyl so im not going to a v-8. im building this to be the perfect daily driver and moderate trail rig...i want to drive it to moab, run upper helldorado, and drive it back...
money is an issue or i would just go to advance adapters, i want to try to piece it together off e-bay or locally...
which auto will most match what i now have and what additional item will i need, i.e master cyl, computer, coolers??
I'm building the wife an XJ the one I found has an ax15 but she wanted an auto. So I went looking for another XJ with an auto I was able to pick it up at a local auction for $35 no title but all I wanted it for was parts. Now I have all the parts needed including the correct pedals, computer and spare engine. Plus plenty of parts for Ebay to finance her project.

The best choice to match what you have got is the AW4. However, the easiest to install will be the TF999. The only bummer about the 999 is that it is a 3 speed, thus lacking an overdrive.
i have a 999 in my jeep.... works great for wheeling, not so hot for highway use. I can still run 70mph with 37's and 4.88 gears but im also runnin 3500rpm's. The 999 is quite a bit shorter than an aw4 as well.(6+ inches)
TF999 + np231w/Super short sye + Dana 60 rear = 20" rear driveshaft.

call advance adapters 1-800-350-2223 ask for a jeep catalog There is allot of info in there as far as avaliable swaps for your jeep ,length of combo's an gearing and strength. If it can be done its probly in that catalog. read it twice. Look over your options 10 times . Make you decition, then question it and make your decition again. You dont want to do it just cause its the popular thing to do. Do the swap thats right for you. Hope I helped. And trust me get that catalog, tons of info in it.
