has any one ever tried this or know wher i can get some good info to attempt this i have a 89 yj with the 4.2 and ba/10 5 spd.. and the donor is a 92 cherokee with the 4.0 and auto tranny. how much of a project is it going to be to swap the motoot and tranny? what i an curious is how are the motor nad tranny mounts going to line up . or are new mounts going to have to be fabricated. and i figrue the drive shaft will have to be shortened. or am i better off bolting the 4.0 up to the 5 spd tranny? what would i need to do this for the computer going from a auto to a 5 spd .. thanks for any light you could shed on the project

should be doable. I've got the wiring down for that swap. I'll post more later.

Engine mounts 'should' be exactly the same. Pretty much the same block, the HO part is actually a different fuel injection system.
Tranny mount is another story. Same sort of mount, but it will be further back since the AW4 XJ tranny is longer than the AX15 that you would be replacing. I little skid drilling/fab work for that, but nothing serious. I'll be doing this in a week or two to my TJ. The wiring part will be a little different for you, but the tranny mount part should be fairly similar. If you just want to use the AX15 I'm not sure how the XJ computer behaves without having the TCU present. The year XJ that you are working with doesn't have any real TCU to ECU communication. The TCU just nabbs sensor input from the ECU wiring harness and never really reports anything to the ECU, so it might run with no errors without the TCU for the tranny.
The newer ODBII XJs have the CCD bus connection between the two controllers, but I'm unsure that its used for anything besides fault code reporting so that a tech can get to the TCU through the ODBII interface. Checkout www.novak-adapt.com for what bolts to what. I'm fairly sure all of the AMC style engines use the same bell housing. I don't remember hearing good things about that tranny though. might be worth looking for an ax15 or nv 3500 if you want to stay with a 5 spd.

The BA-10 has a different spline count then the AX-15 that came out of the 4.0's. The tranny is a POS get rid of it asap.

Hey Jason, I'm doing this swap, 89 4.0 AW4, into an 88 yj. If you have some tips on the wiring, please post. I probably won't do the swap til early summer when my garage is done, but I'm trying to gather all the information I can beforehand. Thanks, Thad |

Shouldn't be too bad. Can't remember is an 88 YJ fuel injected?

No, the 88 is a 258 with carb. I'm figuring on having to swap the computer and all from the donor.

That does sound like pretty good motivation. You going from the 4 banger or is the 6 just dying?

One other thing..
What state to you live in/what are their emissions laws. Several states won't let you install an older motor in a newer vehicle. Jason 1997 TJ 4.0L AW4 D44/Super 8.8 35x12.5 KM2, Onboard Air Gen II AiRock/Longarms PRR Inc, Because rocks can't drive |

Ok.. that'll work
Wiring for the AW-4, especially the early HO ones only really cares about the TPS sensor and power from the Jeep harness. Your best bet is to sit down with the service manuals for each of the years that you have and match up the connections. I can probably scan my diagrams and post them, but I'm not too sure how much they would help.
