You can do the 2wd -> 4wd conversion on the Tacoma PreRunner and 1996-2002 4 Runners. Converting a mini to a 4wd is just going to cost so much and require so much fab work that it won't be worth it.
Even converting a PreRunner -> 4wd will require a lot of work. You're gonna need a transmission, t-case, drive shaft, new front spindles, axles and hubs. If you have an old 80's mini, sell it and buy a 4wd. I see early 90's 4x4's for sale around here for less than $3000 all the time. Be sure to get the 4 cylinder though. The 3.0L has head gasket problems. Here's a few pictures of mine--

While it is easiest to just get a 4x4 'YOTA it is possible to turn a 2wd into a 4wd it just takes a bunch of work...
...and like RJ said you'll about need to buy a whole 4wd rig to get the parts required so why not just get a 4wd to start with. 22RE is the way to go. Don't touch the 3.slow... |
