You'd think the designers would have come up with a new engine instead of just seeing which of their existing ones fit better in the engine compartment. The steering system should have been redesigned as well (including the steering wheel). The front dash speakers look like snail eyes. Where's the German engineering influence?

why would they come up with an all new engine for a vehicle that currently sells under 90K units a year? That's the exact reason the 4.0L is going away. You can't make a business case for a new or unique engine for a low volume vehicle, unless it's a high-end halo vehicle like the Viper. But even with the Viper motor they're using it in the Ram trucks.

From what I've heard, the 3.8L is a pretty decent engine, with a good amount of low-end grunt for a V6.

The steering wheel might be a carry over from another vehicle, but they do that all the time. At one point I think the ZJ, XJ, Ram truck, and even the Viper all used the same steering wheel.

The actual steering on the axle is new though, it's a cross over design (finally!) like what was found on the WJ.

with a decent programmer or aftermarket air system/chip combo it could be tuned to something good.

txxj,

I agree with your reasoning regarding a new vs an existing engine.

I wonder how long we in the USDM will have to wait for the diesel engine. IMO, that will be the only way DCX can make up for ditching the 4.0.

I also scoped it out at Detroit. I personaly was not impressed. I suspect its just going to take some time to get used to because they changed so much at one time. I find it interesting that we have only seen the rubicon version. I suspect that the X and sport versions are going to look quite a bit different with smaller tires. The rubions at least looks proprotional with the big tires.

I've been thinking along those lines, too, Rusty.

I don't see the other versions looking proportional at all with the same flares and smaller tires. I figure the Sahara (which will again be the 'posh' Wrangler -- not that there should be such a critter) will have smaller, painted flares and the X will get unpainted versions of the Sahara flares.

I'm still curious to see the soft-top. Anyone have any idea when we'll get to see some photos of it?

I'm sorry. I'm not buying into the direction the new Wrangler is headed. In my eyes, its caca.

Correct me if I'm wrong, they ditched the mechanical fan. It's running electric now isn't it?

We've seen both models now and still nothing on a soft top? Makes me think they're hiding something. I'm really just more curious than anything. Personally, I think the new model is ugly and I'll just keep looking for a used Rubicon.

I figure we haven't seen a soft top because there's nothing special about it to see. The new modular hardtop is their new 'hotness' so that's what they're showing off, and then of course with no top so you can see the inside and to make it look more 'Jeep' for promo purposes. Same reason we've only seen Rubicon and Sahara models in the photos -- they look cooler.
