seems awfully big for what should just be some gyro and force sensors. With today's tech, they should be able to pack all the needed sensors into something about the size of a deck of playing cards.

Looking at that area from another view in your pics it looks like it would have been the perfect place for the muffler to go (which is how the new FJ Cruiser is -- gas tank under the driver, muffler under the passenger) vs under the back end.

There's a bunch of stuff going on under the new JK's that I really just don't understand...

I think the lines look prett nice. The only thing I notice about the squared off back end of the top is that it reminds me of a H3 Hummer. But it seems that's sort of the styling direction Jeep is taking, since the new Grand Cherokee and the Commander are also pretty square in the back.

The modular hard top is way cool. It would have been nice if they could figure out how to do a full door with roll up windows but without the window surround. That would have elimintated the need for half doors in my book, but I guess it's tough to match up the cowl with the body tub behind the door without having the little angular dip in the half doors. It just always looks a ugly (IMHO) to have full doors in place with the soft top down that have the window surround, but that's what I do now.

Drivetrain seems good. I bet there will be some cool aftermarket fenders out there quickly. Same goes for lifts. Same idea as current TJ's, just slight new angles, lengths, etc., so it shouldn't take long.

Is there a way to turn off the roll mitigation? Otherwise I wonder what happens with some major lean while wheeling if brakes on one side will come on, etc. The stability control will be pretty cool. I have it on my Mini and it works really well. It makes it so it is pretty much impossible to spin out in the snow/ice, but can be turned off if desired to have a little more "fun".

The interior looks to be a step up in comfort, etc., just like from the YJ to a TJ.

So am I understanding correctly that the Unlimited will really be the 4 door? If so, that will size wise make it almost like the old Classic Cherokee, just a bit more "Wrangler" like. It sounds like it's a little bigger than the TJ, which means more weight, especially with all the extra safety and luxury (power windows), etc.

I'm betting, knowing DC's propensity lately to putting big motors in stuff that it won't be long before a V8 shows up. Maybe not the Hemi, but at least something like the 4.7 from the Grand Cherokee/Dodge Durangos.

Maybe I'll give it a year or two to settle out, then think about trading in the old 98 for another project.

Keep in mind that the new Jeep has wider axles than the current TJ.

yeah i assumed that they would be a bit wider. thats ok, nothing wrong with backspacing and with the warn hub kit i have now i already deal with an additional .75" on each side. going to hp 44 later down the line may work/may not.. they arent even out yet.. Wink

So far I'm liking it. I wish they would have come up with the modular hardtop for my LJ. That thing seems more cumbersom than the TJ's. I like the wider track and more interior room. I don't think I'll be trading off my LJ anytime soon, but I don't know that I'll be afraid of the new models when the time comes. If it comes. I may have too many mods on my LJ by then.

It needs a cowbell... Man, those are wide front fenders, and the front clip resembles a KJ too much. Everything else though I like, I especially dig that new storage area in the back.
I figured out what that big black plastic thing is... its the black box for when it goes down everything will be recorded Big Grin. JK I think its part of the evap system or maybe a new cover for the air-lines. Just throwing that out there.

does anyone not think that the gas tank is a little close to the rear axle?

In regard to the fuel tank being close to the axle...wow thats pretty much all i have to say. You wouldnt catch me driving in on the street nevermind wheelin' with the tank like that. I can see it now, the rebirth of the Ford Pinto...we may need that black box after all...

Ill stick to my YJ.Big Grin

Well, since you brought up the Pinto, we may as well set the record straight.

The Pintos exploded because the tank was in the BACK! The Pinto was the one of the earliest cars made that led to the new rear impact rules that are making the fuel tank go where it is! Another example leading to the regs - Ford Crown Vics.

You could not have a Wrangler anymore with a tank in the rear unless your rear was very long because it has to endure a 50mph rear crash without a fuel leak.

I'm sure guys like Kilby will have a skid plate before you know it to protect the tank. The aftermarket always rises to the occasion.

Don't sweat the small stuff.

IF you go to the Jeep website and wait for the 07 wrangler flash screen to show up and click on more info it will show you various pictures. One of them is the new Wrangler with half doors. There is a soft top and half doors available. Smile

I hope they allow the crd diesel for use in the U.S. Do you think that is a governmental thing? I wouldn't think so since the Cherokee has a diesel. (I say Cherokee because anywhere else except the U.S. Canada and the U.K. the Liberty is called Cherokee.)

So if it's not a governmental thing, why would they not offer the diesel? I wonder if Canada will get the diesel? I wonder if Canada will still call it a TJ? (Wrnagler was a Chevrolet pick up so they don't use that name there)

I wonder if they will have an Unlimited AND a four door, or will the Unlimited BE the four door... humm?

Thanks for the info on the gas tank requirements... I wonder what can be done to make that muffler not stick out so much?

I would like to see a similiar aftermarket top for the TJ with three pieces. I don't like the current two piece top since the targa piece (front piece) has to incorporate the door surround shape and so it looks ugly.

anyone have any luck finding the 8 colors they are making available?

Cheers

Gus Padron.

Well yes, that was never in question, but no one has seen the actual soft top yet, that's the issue. We've seen it with no top and full doors, hard top and full doors, no top and half doors, but no soft top pics yet... Frown

From a longevity perspective... I'm happier with the "straight 6" vs. the new V6 on the 07 wrangler. They made lots of good mechanical changes but why didn't they move the side mirror mounts to the frame? Confused

Still loose your mirrors when you take off the
doors... and the new doors look heavier to lift too!

I suspect the mirrors on the windshield would not pass safety regs for visibility.
