Does anyone have an email address for the engineering department at jeep?
I have a 98' TJ and every time i get on the highway for my 5 hour drive I have issues that sound like a fuel pump or clogged fuel filter. It only does this on a long drive such as two hours into the trip. At first I thought it was the fuel pump, dropped the tank and replaced it and still does it on the long trips. Its not just my jeep though, a friend has the exact same jeep and has the same problem on the long trips. Could it just be the 98' sahara 3-spd? Anyways need some info if you've got it, thanks. The last thing any of the Jeep Engineers want is there email address to go public. Can you imagine the PITA that would be? Working under the gun to get your project out on time and in the meantime getting bombarded with emails from folks with mechanical problems on older platforms. I imagine thier IT department would help filter emials like that in a hurry once the engineering department heads got wind of it.
I am just speaking from experience as a Engineer working to roll out new products, while dealing with the old ones. 2002 TJ Sahara 33" BFG AT 4" Ajustable Short Arm Lift SYE Skids/Bodyarmor Warn frt/rr bumpers |

Yeah I can definately see how that would be a burden, but still my friend and I have an issue with our 98 sahara's and its the same thing, I guess who would we go to about our problem?

I don't know if it's the same thing, but every now and then mine stumbles like that. It's usually after I start it and take off, but happens sometimes leaving a traffic light. Hasn't ever died though.

Is it missing? Dieing? What? Two things come to mind.
1... Is your cat getting clogged? Problems usually happen after it gets hot. 2... I had a problem where my 97 would just die. Let it sit a few minutes and it would fire right back up. Piggy backed a battery cable onto the body to engine ground and have not had a problem since. Dave |

Here is exactly what happens (to both of ours), we'll drive for about 130 miles with the cruise control on and then it will have a front to back jerk (slightly) that feels like the wind. I take the cruise control off cause I know what will happen, it will jerk back and forth like someone is gassing it really hard then braking, or im gassing it and it will cut out. It sounds like a fuel problem and might be but there is nothing I can do to compensate for it except not push on the gas.
If I pull over for 10 minutes it will go away for about 4 minutes then come back twice as hard and more frequently. When I fill up it sometimes goes away for good but usually when it does it it gets worse. I do nothing different everytime and sometimes it doesnt happen, for instance all of january and feb it did not happen and this past weekend when I came home. It only does it when it feels like it. I think I am just goint to replace the fuel injectors, fuel rail, and pump (again). Maybe that will solve it unless any of you guys have an idea of what it could be. It sounds like a fuel problem but could it be the tranny by chance? its the t-999 3 spd. Never, Never, Never Quit - W. C. |

Where does this go? Rockcrawler |
Do the cruise controls still have vaccum lines? Sound like my old Buick turned out to be a small leak somewhere.

I think the cruise has one vacuum line, but even sometimes I dont use the cruise for the 5 hours of driving and every now and then it will do it, Ill have to double check though, good point!

Well as you have found out it is not the fuel pump or the filter - if these were
the problem you would have a slow shut down or a full stop. You might have had a fuel problem and sent it up to the injectors... If you have a fuel presure tester I would check to be sure the presure is up to normal levels - if the fuel presure is low it can lead to odd problems because the computer tries to compensate - it goes rich - which can cause the O2 sensors to foul. If this were the problem you would get some codes but only if it was consistent. It does sound like maybe your fuel injectors are clogged - short of replacing $300 worth of injectors check your sensors to make sure they are not fouled. MAP and throttle are right there on the intake - clean them carefully and check for corrosion on the connectors - clean them carefully... Clean you intake with carb cleaner and check all the vacum lines for any leaks. Run two or three fuel injector cleaners through the system. You may have run dirt up to the fuel rail from the pump change. You are sure they changed the pump and the regulator/filter ??? I'd do basic checks for a fouled spark plug and check all your wires to make sure you don't have an intermintent spark that only shows once in a while. I had a number six plug wire that was rubbing and only shorted on an incline - could be something like that. If you have and OBD-II computer - check your fuel presure setting and O2 sensors to make sure they are working. Check any codes you see. You are looking for an O2 sensor that is pegged or not moving - also the fuel pump cycles once you are running. After you check for codes you might try resetting the computer by unhooking the battery for ten minutes - this will reset the computer and sometimes this helps. |
