Most jeep owners wave to one another while driving, I love that. It doesnt seem to matter whether you are driving a beat up stock YJ or a Offroad Monster Rubicon, you see another jeeper, you wave. Why do we do that? Are we just a friendy group of people?

You dont see guys with ricerockets waving to one another.

Even funnier is the wave seems to extend to Sammy's, older land cruisers, and land rover defenders.

I'm fro NJ, which is not a very friendly state, and even there we wave.

Can anybody explain this?

Jeep should use "the Wave" in commercials.

I think that driving a Jeep is about more then just having a vehicle to get around with. Driving a jeep often represents a way of life. We recognize others and give a friendly wave, I like it!

I also ride a 'rice rocket' and contrary to what you said, most of us wave to other bikes as well. Maybe that is just because I live in Canada though, and we're friendly people Smile

I must be at the stuck-up capitol of the world. The last 10-15 people in Jeeps I have waved at never wave back or anything. I cant even remember the last time someone in another Jeep waved back at me Confused I dont get it. But heck, about 99% of the Jeeps around here are TJ's with rich preppy stuck up drivers, and I have no idea why they are driving a Jeep, when they should be driving their lexus or bmw or some other crap like that.

I have also noticed that the people who own new jeeps which never get to go offroad often do not wave. I guess those people aren't really part of the 'jeep culture' though, because like you say, they belong in a Lexus or BMW, not a jeep. Also, not to say anything about our female jeepers, but even I don't bother waving to the high school girls who drive new, stock jeeps.

i occasionally get snubbed but i usually just assume that person wasnt paying attention or was shifting or changing a cd or something

funny enough by me i get waves from female jeepers all the time (i may be in the army, but im not that handsome)

eh i figure the snobs will eventually catch on hey they made a step in the right direction by buying a jeep to begin with

I look at it this way; I'm not necessarily waving at the people; just showing my respect to the vehicle. That way, it doesn't matter if they wave back or not. Funny thing, though, it's such a habit that I've caught myself waving at Jeeps when I wasn't driving mine - either borrowed the wife's mini-van or walking along the street.

I wave all the time. Most of the time I get a wave back. I've never gotten a wave from a woman though, unless you count my friends wife.
I think some people are clueless.

My Jeep is UGLY. Black, Grey, with a bright Yellow cage. I'd say most Jeeps in Des Moines do wave.
How do you wave?
1. The 1 or 2 finger off the top of the wheel?
2. The hand off the wheel?
3. The hand out the window?
4. The entire arm out the door opening?

I'm a #4 but then I never run with the doors on no matter what the weather.

When you buy a Jeep from the dealership, you get a video on the ins and outs of your Jeep. I'm thinking they should cover the Jeep wave in the vid to help out all those newbie clueless people.
I'd say 80% already have it down out here in AZ.

Really depends on my mood, the weather, and whether other folks have waved back or not lately. Recently, it's been more #1 or 2. In the summertime it's more #3 or 4 or over the top of the windshield.

I've noticed lately that the younger drivers don't seem to wave much unless their Jeep is built. I also wave at other (non-Jeep) drivers if they're obviously modded for off-road; not sure they get it.

T'other day I was at my daughter's without my Jeep and a guy drove by and did a u-turn in the cul-de-sac in a nice old CJ-8 Scrambler. I nodded at him and he waved. I'm always waving at Jeeps even when I don't have mine; it's a habit.

Last weekend the weather was BEAUTIFUL. I was towing my Jeep to go wheeling, window down another Jeep was going the opposite way I did a #4 from my tow rig and I recieved a #2 I think he thought it was cold outside. I don't know why it was only 43 degrees outside. The weekend did warm up into the high 60's AWESOME wheeling weather.

I'm glad to be back in the mid-west! Jeepers here know about the wave. After my first 2 weeks in Miami I stopped waving.... no one knew, I just got crazy looks.

The wave lives in NY...at least 75% anyway...we have about 6 jeeps in just my village and they all Wave. Now as far as the ones that only get put in 4 wheel for speedbumps....they will NEVER get it....you just get strange looks.

I love the wave! It's even better when I have my friends in the car with me who are completely jeep illiterate or not very experienced. They think it's strange but way cool. Some of them just think it's because I'm a girl driving a bright purple jeep with awesome custom rims and often covered in mud. That might be true....
My favorite moments though are when I'm coming up on another built jeep and I'm totally checking it out, and then the guy driving it thinks I'm checking him out when in actuality I didn't even notice he was there.... sorry boys!

Around here in western Washington it seems to be the "Wrangler Wave" more then the Jeep wave. But almost every Wrangler, male or female driving, will wave with enthusiasm. There's a few here that don't seem to get it, usually on the Navy base, I figure they're from outta town and haven't figured it out yet. Much friendlier than down in San Diego.

sounds cheesy but..."its a jeep thing! we understand! here in metro atlanta(north ga) id say only about 50% will wave back. most guys/gals i see in stock tjs dont wave back. most with big body lifts dont. 99% of yj owners wave back. if its a girl in the yj id bet the deed to my house she'll wave back. i rarely get a wave back from cj owners and or fj owners.

i drive a pretty stock rubi so some of the "hardcore" lifted guys, that see me wave, dont wave.

the type of wave i use is mostly a one or two until it really warms up. then i usually have the doors off and im a four(no doors, ever except when raining!!!)

i too wave, sometimes and i guess on "accident" when im not in my jeep. but usually the other jeeper doesnt even look at me. in fact im such a jeep nut,i guess, all my friends when driving my jeep will wave too. i just let my best friend(practically my brother) drive my jeep to key west and when he came back one of the first things he told about was how many did and didnt wave. also no matter what im driving or who im riding with or whos with me...the first one to see another jeep says "JEEP".

when i had my s2000 i got waved at a couple of times. my fiance gets waved at by fellow tc and scion owners. anyway...

later

jason

I'm a woman and I indeed wave!...My Hubby would shame me if I didn't. It is a way of life and it validates our own insanity. So keep waving some of those women are "wanna bes" and that's OK...Imitation is the sincerist form of flatery.

Big Grin You're right, Canadians are more likely to be friendly in general; at least inside Canada.

I've also noticed a few nods and even a wave from hardcore bikers (custom Harley drivers). I used to ride a big Yamaha and aways waved at other bikes; the Harley riders usually snubbed my rice rocket, except all my friends from university, who all had Harleys. [Mine was usually the only one running when we tried to go on a long run]
