I am looking for a rear bumper for a 03 Rubicon. I would like a receiver hitch that will handle a motorcycle rack with a 275 lbs Yamaha TW200 on it (350 lbs total). I would also like a swing out spare tire carrier, two fuel can brackets, hi-lift bracket, possibly a wilderness rack and two shackle attachments. I would also like to not modify the body of the Jeep for installation. Is there such a beast out there? BTW drilling extra holes in the frame for support is acceptable. With all that weight on the back will the Jeep be too light in the front end? Who's products should I be looking at?
Thanks Pat |

Thats a hell of a lot of weight on the back of a Jeep, its going to drive really bad with all that hanging off back there. If I were to recomend any type of bumper for all that it would probably be a Jeeperman bumper with a frame tie-in kit...I would also weld everything in place just because you are going to try and put so much weight back there.

I like the looks of the tube bumpers but not for this application. I was looking at the Bulletproof FF1RS but was wondering if there are others out there that are as good or better? I saw one but you had to drill the tub of the Jeep to attach it which was not appealing. I would like something that I can install and if I decide to get a new Jeep in a few years take off the goodies and return it to stock so I can re-use the bumpers on the next rig (spend the $ only once) I also want one that attaches well to the rig and does not tear the truck up. I like the looks of the Warn rear bumper but am afraid it may be a a bit light duty. I have not seen the Wilderness offering in person, nor the Bulletproof so am asking which rear bumpers should I be looking at so I only have to buy one instead of keep finding a better one out there (do my homework first). I need the jerry cans as I need more than 300 miles of range running around in the South Idaho and Northern Nevada deserts. The add-on rack may be nice but I have only had my Jeep for one week and have yet to go out on an expedition (as I said I'm a FNG). I used to have a CJ-7 and an FJ-40 but they were not reliable enough for longer trips (only short day trips close to home). The jack rack and shovel racks are a nice plus but are not necessary. The motorcycle rack again is a nice plus but not necessary as I may pull a small trailer behind. Any recommendations on a tough trailer other than a mil-surplus Jeep trailer?
Thanks for the help Pat |

MtGoat,
Where in ID/NV are you at? I have a BP bumper (though I am hesitant to recommend them due to the problems I had with getting) that has been great. Its taken a lot of abuse and has held up, it was just a major hassle to get it (you'd have to find my posts about it for details). I'll be, tentatively, spending some time in Idaho in December if you want to see the bumper in person. |

If you want to bring that much stuff with you I'd look at digging up a trailer. Canadian M101 or US M416/M100 style. Given the cost of the BP bumpers it might actually be cheaper.
The group I run with has 2 now (my M101 and a buddies M416) its made wheeling and camping ALOT easier. you can pack the trailer with all of the camp/support/extra spares and drop them at the campsite. Then go wheeling. They have enough clearance to get back into the woods/desert pretty well also. Mine came with 32" Michelin XCLs stock. quote: I think thats the best suggestion yet. My buddy John tows an M416 behind his TJ through all the trails, he's run the Rubicon and all kindas of other hard trails with that trailer taging along the whole way. ------------------------------ 93 YJ, 35" MT/Rs, 5.5" lift, HP D44 front, D44 rear, 4:1 tera low, locked, geared, dented and scarred.06 Ranger 4x4. |

Very stout and well built. It will handle just about everything you mentioned except it does not have a safari rack. If you talk to James (the owner) he could probably make a rack for you. I have been very happy with mine. ________________________________________________________________________________ "Beaten paths are for beaten men."
