There's been many write-ups on this topic, so I'm not going to reinvent the wheel here, just thought I'd post a pic since I haven't seen pics of any put in this location.
There's a handy couple of bolts that attach the fender to the grill, and it's almost completely surrounded by the sheet metal. This will prevent the tire from getting ahold of it under full stuff and should also protect it pretty well from rocks and mud being slung about since it's not in the wheel well itself. The light shines out to the side of the tire and also lights up ahead OK, the aim can be adjusted a little, but it's kind of tight. I used these cheap lights since they were only $15 a pair, rears will go on probably next weekend. One switch will controll both, but I picked up two relays that I mounted under the hood to minimize the current through the switches and wires. Good luck, Mark To boldly go where we're too stupid to know any better. "Use your hammer, not your mouth, jackass!" I hope your rock hounds don't throw a pebble into them. Every time I pull on to a highway after going over gravel, my rock hounds throw pebbles for a 1/2 mile or so. They really feel good on the old arm hanging out the window!

I know what you mean, I've also learned to keep some distance between Jeeps when leaving a trail and heading out on the road. My windshield thanks me.

Squid:
Nice job on the lights. Always nice to see how others are solving the same problems. Here's a helluva leap: that little slice of wheel I can see looks a bit like American Racing Mojave style. Any chance that's right? If so, have you had 'em long & how do you like 'em? Cheers, BlackJack |

Actually they are Eagle Alloy Series 057. I've never weighed them, but they feel about the same with my 33" MTRs as my stock steelies and 31" BFG ATs did. My wife has some American Racing Outlaw II that seem about the same in weight and quality. Both have a deep dish design that keeps the wheel away from the rocks, and none have any leaks, so I guess they do what they are suupposed to do.

Yeah I had a brain fart about 3 weeks after buying my LJ and pulled out right behind my buddy. I've got a nice spider in the upper right hand corner now. Dennis 05 Yellow Not Limited Rubi (excpt for the shovel under my Jeep) 88 Sami JX Locked, Lifted, & Lobstered |

Here's some pix, sorry about taking them in the garage.
Finished the rear, here's where I mounted it. I just drilled and tapped the rear lower control arm mount. It's on the inside of the frame and should be pretty protected, and by crossing the beams I get more spread of light. Here's how the light pattern looks. Fills in front of the rear tire well, and lights up underneath so a spotter can see clearance. This message has been edited. ** UPDATE **
These have worked great, the only issue was they didn't shed any light in the front because they were so well tucked up. Here's the fix... Cheap small lights from Wally World Tucks up perfect, and holes alread there to run wires and mount. I had used one switch to operate two relays for front and rear, so all I had to do was add this to the front circuit and up the fuse to 15 amps. Mounting up and on each side works better for me, as they don't get mudded up so badly.
With regards to the actual lights, IMHO you're better off with a flood than a spot pattern. Tractor supply has some nice rubber covered ones for around $12 ea. Rig considerably more capable than operator. |
