A friend of mine just bought a '73 CJ5 with a V-8. I was over looking at it and listening to it run. Looks good and sounds good. However, we took it out for a small outing and found that when at an incline (even a small one), it would starve for fuel (clear filter)and stall. It runs fine down the raod. It has a fairly new two barrel Holley carb, new sending unit, and new fuel pump. We have checked all the fuel lines from the pump to the carb while cranking it over, they all seem to have plenty of flow. Re-assembled the lines and very little flow. We are out of ideas as to what would be causing this?!?!? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If it has a mechanical fuel pump. I would suggest installing an electric fuel pump. That would keep a constant pressure to the carb. Might also change out the fuel lines. I tried a mechanical pump on my 350 for a while and a crawling speeds it seemed like it was running out of gas. Put on a Holley 7 PSI pump. No more problems.

With a 2 barrel on a stock motor, the fuel pump should be able to keep up with it. The only time I have seen that happem was with a Holley 500 2bbl on a 360. He ended up installing a 4bbl and electric pump and had no problems after that.

I have a holley 600 on a built 360 with a high output mechanical pump from Summit and have had no problems.

Is there maybe somethin in the tank that is preventing the pickup line from delivering fuel? I would think there would be some sort of obstruction causing this problem.

The problem is the Holley carb. It isn't designed to run at an angle. It'll starve or flood, depending on the angle, every time you're on an incline.

Go find a stock replacement Motorcraft 2100/2150 and bolt it up. It'll run like a champ once you get the right carburetor on it and get it tuned in.

I run a TJ equipped with a 350 Chevy running a Quadrajet carb. I don't have a problem goin uphill. It is the downhill decents when it wants to try to die on me. I was at Barnwell Mountain in Texas this past weekend. Anyone familiar with the place knows about the 5 Diamond hill DeWoody. I climbed it twice this past weekend. No problem except when the front end got airborn a few times and bounced the front end. Then my engine died. But, it cranked right up and I climbed out the top of the hill. A carburated engine is a simple set-up with one hot wire to make it run. This doesn't mean that I wouldn't mind having a RAMJET-350 some day.
I like to keep it simple so that I can work on it! Electronic fuel injection is not simple.
My 2 cents!!!!!!

I was out there this past weekend as well doing trail maintenance. I was putzing around in my Dodge though. Gotta love a diesel on hill climbs. Just put it in granny low and idle right up the hill. Big Grin
