I am getting ready to swap on some new knuckles on the front of my 93 YJ and while I am doing that I would like to go ahead and replace the balljoints while I have it torn apart. I figure with almost 180K on the clock it probably wouldnt hurt it. Does anyone have a good write up on it, I havent found mutch on the net and the haynes manual I have dont really say crap about replaceing the ball joints. Can anyone help?

Yea, you really should just go get the tool needed for the Job. I would think that your local auto-parts store would rent it out to you, I know most around here do. Its very easy once you have the tools.

So you need a special tool? I have never replaced ball joints before. I checked the site you posted and it had all kinds of good writeups but I didnt see one for balljoint replacement. What kind of special tool is this? What do you need to do to get the old ones out and the new ones in? Thanks for your help so far.

Here's another one...Klicky...better pix and clearer write up. The tool is $40 at Harbor Freight. It's basically a modified "C" clamp with cups to support the joint and anvils to press on/off. Get your hands on a factory service manual so you have good torque specs, and the correct measurements for the steering angles and such. You should be able to get the steering close enough to get to a good shop and get an alignment. Good luck!

Thanks for the links that cleared it up some. What is gonna change on the steering angles? I thought it was pretty mutch straight forward, unlike tierods and such where they need to be adjusted. But on that note I am also planning on replaceing them too, so I am already planning on a front end alighnment, is there a cirtian way the balljoints have to be installed in order for the wheels to sit straight? Just trying to iron out everything before I tear it apart. Thanks, --Jared

I meant the alignment setup (toe in), not the other angles, they shouldn't change from just doing the ball joints. Here's a good description with pix to help you get it set before heading to the shop. Right here!
