Well I was wheelin the other day and went through a deep water crossing with large ice chunks and when got under the jeep and ripped my high pressure fuel line a little. Still runs but I loose more gas then what is getting to the motor. So being at school and 4 hours from home I could not do the job myself so I brought it to a guy and he started to work on it. Well to make a really long story short the bolts holding the tank up just turn while trying to back out the nuts and he called a guy at jeep and they said to do it you need to cut them then replace the cross member yada yada yada, and it would be a 15 hour job. While my jaw is hitting the ground and my head is flipping him the bird. So I have a kilby skip plate so I have had the tank dropped before however they were not rusted and came right out and I am curious if anyone knows how I could get these nuts out and drop the tank? If not I was thinking about going to a fuel cell and cut the bolts and sell the skid plate and tank. Please let me know your thoughts.

Some pics would be nice to see exactly what you are talking about. Sorry but I dont understand fully what the problem is. Is the bolts just rusted and you are unable to get backup on the bolt to keep it from turning? Where would you put the fuel cell (inside or outside the cab)? IF you do use a fuel cell and sell the skid and tank then you still have to remove it.

sorry i guess i was a little vague the bolts come down from the crossmember and seem like they might be welded inside the crossmember and then nuts are places under the skid plate. After trying to turn the nut the nut and bolt turn and there is not way to get to the top of the bolt. So getting the tank down seems like no problem cut the bolts fine but i can't replace the bolts because they are inside the crossmember. So getting rid of the tank no problem it is just how do i get it back up once dropped. Or are there other options on replacing the line with out dropping the tank. Stupid idea from jeep in my opinion.

Well, The easiest way I think (I am just assuming, I don't know without seeing your problem) would be:
1.Cut the bolt/nut like you said to remove the gas skid. 2. drop everything, Drill out the bolts(drill holes to get the bolts out)in the crossmember. Just get them out so they are not rattling around. 3. Buy some grade 8 bolts, nuts, washer, etc... that are same size as old (or ones that will work) 4. In the holes that you drilled to remove the old ones, place head of new bolt in hole and weld it into place (flush mount or as close as possible). Also may have to fill holes by welding and grind smooth. End product should look like crossmember with just threads extending from (no head of bolt should be showing/ only threads). 5. Should be able to fix what you need to with the line and reassemble. I like working will metal because you can F*** up. And if you do you can weld it, grind it, drill it, etc.. back into shape. 15 hours my A**, I think I could have it done in 6 hour at most working by myself (maybe sooner). Please note: remove gas tank completely before welding, be careful with flamable vapors, etc... I can only assume this will work because I have not seen your problem ( you know what they say about assuming). GOOD LUCK and I hope this helped you out. 03 Rubicon, PSC goodies, some custom, and alot more needed upgrades. |
