What sort of highway gas mileage are you getting with your Rubicons? I was looking at a 6 spped Rubicon Unlimited over the weekend and the salesman said they are listed as 20 MPG on the highway, but his customers who drive the speed limit and are reporting 21 - 25 MPG.

Also, are there any mods you can do that will improve the gas mileage on a Rubicon?

1.) Jeeps get BAD gas mileage Frown
2.) Most of us average in the 15-18 range if we're lucky.
3.) IMHO, 25 out of even a stock rubi is nuts.
4.) The 6 speed doesn't have as much OD ad the 5spd did. With stock tires and 4.10s they have been approaching 3k on the highway. Jeeps are happiest in the 2250-2500 range.

I just don't trust others to honestly report their fuel economy. I'm sure most are either liars or stupid, maybe both. That was best driven home in the late 1980s when 3 of us in nearly identical CJs went to Moab together. Same basic lifts, tires, and engines. Minor differences in weight loads, etc. We all drove together, same identical speeds. We also stopped at the same filling stations and the only real difference in fuel taken was that the leader on each leg of the journey took about a gallon more than the followers. Most interesting because we kept changing the lead, for all 1600 miles.

We were getting about 17 mpg. Later, at a club function, one guy started bragging we got 20+ on the trip. The other guy just called his bluff, saying "Jim, how do you figure that? We all took the same gallons of fuel and Dick and I only got 17!" Some bad feelings over that.

My rubicon is, unforuneately, an automatic. I wanted to see how the other half lived, so I ordered it that way. I'm very happy to get 14, but thats an average. One leg of this years trip with my wife driving, admittedly with a strong head wind an her trying to hold 75 mph, we got 9.7 mpg. I've got the notes my wife took to prove my numbers.

I get significantly better fuel economy in the mountains. Its also better at lower speeds, but you go too slow the awful OD reduces the RPM to the point where its constantly kicking down into passing gear.

If your salesman is convinced about the fuel economy, call his bluff. Ask if you can fill it and take it for a 100 mile test drive, then fill it again. 20 MPG would require 5 gallons. Wanna bet it takes 7?

My 05 Rubicon Unlimited is getting a firm 14.5 miles to a gallon. I have almost 500 miles on it now. I would be really surprised to see 20 miles to a gallon. Just for gee wiz. My 92 YJ with the 4.0 is getting 15 miles to a gallon on 33's and thats with 4.11 gears

On my 2001 TJ (I-6, AW4 auto) I normally get anywhere from 10 to 12 mpg topless. I get from 13 to 14 top-on. That was before I read the acetone article.

For the past few months, I have been running acetone in my fuel in a 1oz-to-5gal ratio. Some of that time I didn't check milage because I borrowed a rear 4.10 axle to see if I liked the gearing, but didn't change the speedo gear. Now, it's back to 3.73s for the time being and the speedo is correct.

This mornings fill-up yielded 14.07 mpg and the Jeep has been TOPLESS for the whole tank. So the acetone is working! A couple times, I didn't run any acetone in the tank and the milage went back to normal. So the acetone isn't just cleaning injectors or something. It actually does help increase the fuel milage.

Using my figures...
I drove 15 or so miles on the last tank for free.
or,
At 2.15/gallon, and 14 mpg, getting 15 more miles... I saved $2.30 this tankfull.

That may not sound like much, but if you figure out it's like a good percentage increase in fuel milage. Something between 10 and 20%! I'll take that!

If you want to know more about this acetone thing, check out THIS ARTICLE.

Man Yuri.. we need to work on your gearing or getting that thing to lock up. My last tank was about 14 mpg and half of it was towing my M101 @ 70 mph.

Well... That's also with no top/doors. If I run with a top and doors, I can probably add 20 miles per tank. That would put me in the 15-16 range. But I like to be doorless Big Grin (I may regret that today at work, because it looks like a thunderstorm is coming... guess I better take a break and go put trash bags over the seats)

I'm still wondering how a discussion on rubicon gas mileage degenerated into how wet your butt got.

Yuri set up a frame for a new conversation about fuel milage with no top/ doors, rain, then trash bags. You then said...

Due to my wet ***, my fuel milage was measured obviously without top or doors, but it seems i forgot to get the milage. Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin

Big Grin LOL Big Grin

Thanks for the good laugh, SprungTJ!

Back to milage: This last tank with no doors/safari top/ and Acetone in the tank yielded 15.01 MPG and no wet a$$es.

Actually, I'm surprised that nobody asked any questions about the acetone...

Been reading about it over on the naxja site, didn't really see that anyone got any real benifit out of it.

Got 3000 miles to drive at the end of the month. Might just have to pick some up and give it a try.

I'm getting quite a bit of benefit from it... roughly 15-20 more miles per tank. That's a pretty good increase. But i don't know how much of an increase that would actually yield when you factor in the price of the acetone.
