For starters, get a good study guide for your written test. You can get them at Radio Shack or from W5YI. If you go to Radio Shack, be sure to take a look at the date the guide is valid. They are real bad about letting out of date study guides sit on the shelf, knowing most people won't see the *fine print*. When you're ready, find a local club to see when and where you can take your test. Also, if you decide to go for it, the morse code requirements have taken some changes since I got my ticket. Now all you need to be able to pass is a 5 word per minute test. That's the easy one! For radios, I run Yaesu and Icom. Kenwood also makes some very nice radios, but are a bit pricey. You might also drop by ARRL. They have some useful info there as well. Good luck!

Yeah, what he said....  Bullfrog, there are study guides for each of the 3 current ARS (Amateur Radio Service) levels. DM is right -- go to ARRL for an overview and to download as much free material as you've got bandwidth & storage for. The lowest ham license category is incredibly easy to get. It's alot like getting your driver's license: you can get a book that has the entire "pool" of questions along with answers. Read that. Then you take a test that is a very small semi-random sample of the question pool, and you can even miss a few and still pass. See, just like a driver's license, though, what a minute: it's difficult to kill someone by breaking the FCC laws, but if you do it's a felony. It's extremely easy to kill someone by disobeying traffic law, but it's usually a ticket?? What up with that?  Lastly, a great source of info, product reviews and sample tests is www.eham.net.
