Got this of another Jeep board tonight. PLEASE check it out!

Google has implemented a new feature wherein you can type someone's telephone number into the search bar and hit enter and then you will be given a map to their house. Everyone should be aware of this! Note that you can have your phone number removed or blocked. Before forwarding this, I tested it by typing my telephone number in google.com. My phone number came up, and when I clicked on the MapQuest link, it actually mapped out where I live. Quite scary. Please look up your own number. Read below for details.

Think about it--if a child, ANYONE gives out his/her phone number, someone can actually now look it up to find out where he/she lives. The safety issues are obvious, and alarming. In order to test whether your phone number is mapped, go to: http://www.google.com/ Type your phone number in the search bar (i.e. 555-555-1212) and hit enter. If you want to BLOCK Google from divulging your private information, simply click on the link above your listed phone number and complete the form. Removal takes 48-hours. If you are unlisted in the phone book, you might not be in there, but it is a good idea just to check. If your number does come up if you hit map, it will show you a direct map to your house.

Adversity does not build character "it reveals it"

Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature,
nor do the children of men as a whole experience it.
Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright
exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.

I share your concerns .... I have been unlisted for decades. This is the information age .... assume there is no privacy Frown

Or go VOIP, then even the 911 guys don't have a clue where you live Smile.

There isn't even a land line connected to my house. Feel liberating dumping one monopoly, downside is that it makes me more dependant on another one.

Dont' forget, also that you can have your number unlisted for a few extra bucks a month (rip-off). Of course they still goof up (ours ended up in the white pages one year) and it takes a while to clear from the databases, but start now and work it out over the next year or two.

I confess that I do use the public lookups when I need to ship something to someone and they didn't give me a phone # etc. But I also share your concerns about privacy. Ugh. No winning you know?

The reverse lookup stuff doesn't bother me. But putting a link right there to provide a map does. Most criminals are inherantly lazy, and so that's one less step they have to take to locate you. Maybe I'm just funny that way. There's both good and bad to be said about the availability of information these days. And I know....you can kiss your privacy good-bye!
