I need to replace the drivers seat, its shot.

Where can I get an OEM seat or am I better of getting an after market seat. I don't want to spend an arm and a leg for it. If after market which one. Are after markets the same size as OEM or are they narrower?

You can get almost anything you want on the aftermarket. You generally need to replace both of them if matching means anything to you.

Most auto wrecking yards have seats. As you've found, the drivers seat is normally more worn. Thats just a function of there always being someone in that seat when its moving...

You can generally put a passengers seat itself on the drivers side. The real difficulty is getting the bolts out.

Factory seats have gotten pretty cheap over the years. The metal isn't thick and its not very strong. If your seat frame is still unbroken and its just the padding and upholstry thats shot, almost any auto shop that does upholstry work can fix that. You can usually buy OEM seat upholstry from a dealership. Some auto trim shops even will make anything you want, up thru and including leather.

For the do-it yourselfer, its easiest to just buy a seat from a junkyard.

check the (Jeep) 'for sale' forums. There are always people selling their OEM seats, because they want to change or upgrade Smile

The best place to look is in the auto wrecking yards. Thats where you'll find one seat. Just remember you can use either side on the drivers side. Just make sure the one you get is from the same general year. They've changed a couple of times (not for the better, either.)

The hillbilly short term solution is to move the passengers seat to the drivers side and take the broken one apart. If you strip off the cover and the foam, you'll find where the metal frame (usually low on the back) has broken. Any welder can tack weld on some metal so it'll hold weight. The fun comes when you attempt to repad the frame. Get new foam, the old crap is falling apart... There are some glue's that will help. It doesn't matter how it looks, the cover will hide it.

Thats a stop gap measure that I've seen work for several years, but it will fail again, and sooner than the first cycle.

I use Craigs List because it is local - no shippping - but because there is less stuff local you have to hunt for a while - or advertise a want add - I never use Ebay any more because I'm tired of the shipping costs and the whole send it into the blue thing - with CL I get cash and at most have to deliver in in town to someone.

Here in Phoenix we have tons of jeep stuff.

I have rolled my jeep - the cage did not stand up - the seats broke - and I spent
alot of time putting a new welded six point cage in with Beard seats and five
point harness. It may be factory but my opinion is that is is marginal hardware
at best - it nearly cost me my life - and it was a close run thing to boot.

Now anyone I talk to gets the full run down with pictures of all
the flaws and I do my best to help them get a real cage that will make it
through a 75 mph roll on the highway - or a turtle in the field without
getting you killed.

After going through the legal/engineering crap it is obvious to me that
the cage, seats, and belts in a stock jeep are marginal at best for off
road driving.

I was lucky - when I rolled my rig I was going zero mph and turtled on a
steep incline - I still almost didn't make it ...
