Hey fellas! I could use a little assistance please. I've already gotten 2 tickets for my overdue inspection and I can't get my rig inspected till this C.E.L. goes off.
Here are the Error Codes: ENG: 161/P0455 Evap System Leak (Large) Eng: 160/P0442 Evap System Leak (Small) Vacuum lines are leaking I guess ?? A friend told me to spray carb cleaner around them while the engine is running and wait to hear hesitation when the carb cleaner is sucked into the leaking hose. Any thoughts ideas or similar experience ?? Thanks in advance ! Check out my Interior Carpeting in the for sale section! |

I had similar problems in my 97 (you don't tell us what year\model you have). I had to replace the evap canister and the hoses leading to\from. Your simplest thing to do to start may just be replace the two or three hoses attaching to the canister.

We had that happen on a customer's TJ. Turns out he had 2 blown fuses in the fuseblock behind the glovebox. Changed those, erased the codes and the CEL never came back on.

I had P0456 when we left for Colorado about a month ago. Being convinced that in many cases the check engine light is just a revenue step for dealers, I ignored it. When we got to the All-4-Fun event a friend there had a code reader. Not that I needed it, you probably know that all you need to do is turn the ignition on and off 3 times to read the codes.
Mine was also a "small evap leak". It wouldn't clear when we tried, so I continued ignoring it. The jeep ran fine. A few days later the light went out. Not a flicker since. Yes, spraying carb cleaner or even WD40 on the lines will sometimes locate the leak. The problem is that the evap canister isn't the easiest thing to get to. My guess is that the large leak will be easier to find. The reason I'd try WD over carb cleaner is that its less flamable. You may have hit something or got a vaccum line snagged or pinched and its now finally worn thru or open, maybe pulled off. At the age your TJ is now, the lines may have just cracked from heat, etc. Dick Burg Remember, if you're not in the lead, the view's always the same. |
