Like so many of the questions we read, we need more information to really give a good answer. Yes, I'm running 285s on 8" wheels. Thats about the equivalent of 34x11.80x16. They're certainly not too narrow. The guys that run wide rims and go in rocks often find they need more tire pressure to keep from levering them off the rim.
Those of us with narrower rims generally don't have as much trouble. Dick Burg Remember, if you're not in the lead, the view's always the same. |

In my case I have a canyon trail - called spare tire canyon - that is so narrow that I can not
run 15x10 rims - I can just make it with the stock axle with and 3.75 backspacing in my 15x8 wheels. |

Back in the 1990s we went to the All-4-Fun in Gunnison, CO. One of the trails, which they called "SunPark" was limited to "narrow track" vehicles. Most of the time, owners of wide and long vehicles are often offended when they hear that their pet ride won't be allowed. That year the leader on the day we took the ride had a homemade caliper. He'd taken at board and nailed two pieces of wood onto it. It was a pass/fail kind of thing. At the lineup, he just walked down the line measuring each one. Any that were wider than the maximum had it explained to them that they really needed to select another trail. If the choose to come along, he had no ill feelings, just that they would be required to be at the rear of the line. Of course that caused some grumbling. That list included any CJs with Cherokee axles, any YJs with 10" rims, or any similarly equipped TJs. All the trucks and Blazers, etc were also warned. The first half of the ride was uneventful. Then we drove up a desert hill and into the forest. Before we entered, the leader explained that we weren't turning back because someone couldn't make the squeeze points. Sure enough, there were two giants of the forest, spaced just a tad wider than my Jeep. I scrubbed my tires and wheels, had to fold in my mirrors, but I got past the thing. Then a bit farther there were a couple of other tight places. Due to terrain and the size of the trees, there was no way around. Then the guys that were warned were even hotter. Guess they just can't believe that there are places wide is a problem Dick Burg Remember, if you're not in the lead, the view's always the same. |

spare tire canyon is a narrow rock slit that is
so narrow for two hundred yards that you need to do that - and then there is the squeeze. Even with a narrow track your tires have to side wall around a number of protrusions - can you say SIDE WALL DAMAGE .. X3 - But the trail the other side - and the canyon on the other side is - so pristine - maybe two people a year get to seek it ... Worth going there. |
