Can someone tell me where to even start:

Just recently, my airbag light comes on intermittantly. Usually it only stays on for a few seconds, but it comes back on right away.

This was happening a few times everyday, and then magically, it went away.

Now... every time I make a right turn, ir hit a large bump, the light comes on.

Is there a "cheap way to flash the codes from the PCM to tell me what is wrong?

Large bump... Do the speedo and tac go dead when the light is on? TJs are notorious for loose dash connections. The light comes on when the bus connection is gone (also killing the speedo and tac).

Pulling the dash (which isn't all that hard to do on a TJ) and bending the connectors a little tends to help.

Auto Zone will flash the codes for free if you are close to one, or hold down your trip reset button and turn ignition on and off three times without starting it and it will give you the code. Then you can probably find the OBD codes online somewhere for free.

It may also be your Tone Ring that is the electronic bridge between the steering wheel electronics and the steering column. My airbag light was doing the same thing for a year before I lost cruise, horn, and air bag light went on. I guess dirt/dust gets in there and begin to wear down the connections.

I had that problem on my 99. There was in the past a fix for it posted on the web. Somebody with a web site named Harry had it.

All it required was for you to remove the speedo/tack head from the dash and tweak the pins. You did that with a tiny needle nose pliers. You didn't bend them much, just a little twist on each one. When you reassembled it they all made contact for another couple of years.

The original poster had his Jeep back under warranty multiple times. The dealer replaced a lot of parts before they figured it out. I hate to leave my jeep at a dealer. They usually leave the keys in it and park it outside for anyone to rummage thru.

When my problem stated happening I was pretty upset. I tempered that with the observation that my miles weren't being racked up on the odometer. After a hundred miles I hit another bump and it started working. I just used my GPS for a speedometer. I didn't take it apart and fix it until I was ready to sell it.

my 98 is doing just the airbag light as well. I have been meaning to do the pin bending deal being the instrument panel but have been busy doing other fixes. let me/us know if you do that and it goes away or the tone ring. good luck

so is this tone ring/clockspring readily available at napa or a dealer item? or is it fixable without replacing? and how do you get the steering wheel off?

Well guys, Airbag systems aren't something to mess with unless you are a professional. Autozone will not be able to read Airbag faults, and just buying parts to GUESS what is wrong isn't right. Airbags have sophisticated self-diagnosis, and usually is right on the money with the problem.

I am a professional technician, and while I'm up for fixing your own stuff, airbags aren't something to mess with. If one exploded while you were working around or near it, you could be killed. Static electricity, voltmeters, testlights and even clearing faults can explode the bag. Let a dealership or possibly independent shop look at it.

Besides, airbag parts are usually REALLY expensive, especially if it is the bag that has failed. Plus a safety item like an airbag might be covered under warranty much longer than other parts. Have a professional check it out.

Oh Heck just cut the wires on the airbags and pull the light out of the dash cluster that will fix it!!!JUST KIDDING!I am with chris on this one an airbags system is not something to play with they will KILL YOU! if your not experianced with them. However there is good news I to have an airbag light that was coming on in my 97 tj when i took the dash out to put the cage in it magicly stopped coming on when i replugged my cluster in to place. as to reading code I bought a code reader at Napa they are cheap! less then a good weekend of wheelin
