Anybody have anything to say good/bad about the s.s Magnaflow cat back? I'm looking for someone who actually put one on and either loves it or wishes he'd gotten something different. I'm looking for better sound primarily, but don't want to lose any bottom end oomph. I know what the mfr. says about dyno results on their site, but you guys know what's what. Thanks.

Snake oil. I assume you are talking about putting one on some year TJ ? At any rate, what you get out of these is a lighter wallet, and maybe a placebo effect. I put a new cat-back system on my Jeep, from cat to the headers, but only because my manifold cracked, and my cat was rattling. I saw no performance or gas mileage change. I also did a K&N air filter system, again, no real change.

These sorts of mods have an impact in racing, where hundredths of a second and subtle performance boosts make a real difference at the extremes, but this is truck, basically, with the aerodynamics of a brick.

As for sound, well, I prefer my vehicles to be as silent as possible. If a changed sound is all you are looking for, I'd start with the muffler.....

Thanks, I appreciate your opinion. Like I say, though, I'm mostly looking for a better exhaust tone for my 04 TJ, not a better top end where I don't spend any time anyway. Long story, but some lowlife scumbag jacked the catalytic converter from our 14-year old Nissan minivan last week. In the 3 days it took to get the replacement converter, I got to really like the
deeper, throaty sound and it got me thinking that this would be no bad thing for the Jeep.

Jeez - that's awful. I guess with platinum going at $3000 an ounce, these cats become valuable.

I jeep in the woods, sometimes to hunt, sometimes to fish, and sometimes to just enjoy nature. A loud (or louder) exhaust would be detrimental for me.

I put a K&N Air Tube, Banks Header, Mustang Cat, bigger exhaust tube, Cherry Bomb
in my rig. I did the header last and to a large extent I did not see alot of
difference in my performance. Also put new O2 sensors in...

When I put the header in it seemed like all my mods cashed at the same time - I
was screaming around like I had a V-8 - sounded like it too because of the
cherry bomb.

K&N Tube - its dusty in the desert and I needed to clean them every few thousand
so without a K&N it would cost me alot.

Mustang Cat - it was a little bigger than the jeep one and only cost $89 vs $286
for the Chrysler ... I had to put a new cat back in for the long arm so I put
the Cherry Bomb in to avoid the long arms - and the tube back was easy .

When I put the header in I fabbed a new header to cat tube to get a little
more room and changed the size up 1/4 of an inch or more - I think the factory
tube is about 2-5/8 and I was around 3-1/4.

When I put the new O2 sensors in - it ran like a Bat out of H*** - and I figured that
it was just bad O2 sensors - turns out the computer was ramping up the gas as the
O2 sensors got old - but there is no way to tell the computer that there are new
O2 sensors - so it still ran rich. Wammyy -- no need for a V-8

Later on I learned that all I had to do was pull the battery for a few minutes
and the computer would loose the data and start over with the original setting.
And would not be as rich...

Argh - you just reminded me - I replaced my O2 sensors last year as well, and I never did the reset. However, I noticed a slight, and what turned out to be temporary, increase in my gas mileage, and then everything settled back to usual. I have to believe the engine computer is smart enough to not need a reset after a new O2 sensor - the sensor merely returns a reading to the computer, a newer sensor would simply return a more accurate reading, no ?

If you do not reset the computer it will slowly adjust to the new sensors - but the reset - does it in five minutes - with gas the way it is - getting even one mpg is something to look for.
