Has any found a more robust stereo installation kit for the single din radio? The one I have is just flimsy plastic (available from Quadratec and many other places) and it's not really holding up well. If my Jeep were a street car it would probably be fine but seeing that washboard desert fire roads need to be run at moderate speed to get from Trail A to Trail B..... things are different. I have thought about reinstalling the anti theft bracket, but it's a bit of a pain to get it lined up with the aftermarket headunit. I am guessing I will have to modify the bracket a bit to get it to work. Another option is to fab up some sheet metal to make the stereo mount similar to a Toyota, that method seems to be pretty solid.

What have you guys done to really anchor in the headunit?

Well I answered my own question.

My original install kit had a cd case "cubby hole" under where the head unit would slide in. The problem is that this cubby hole feature blocked the area where the stereo chassis sleeve tabs would normally bend in. I realized, and remembered, after I pulled the head unit out again to have a think.... the old install kit was junk. After picking a more basic install kit with just a plain surround I was able to anchor in the head unit a bit more. I then had the idea to "wedge" the chassis, top and bottom, into the dash through hole. I used some extra rubber bushings that are normally used for front shock tops for the wedging. The bushings were mounted with velcro so that they would move around.

Pretty solid now, and easy to do.

My jeep had a similar problem with the radio suround when I bought it. the lower left bolt tab had broken on the plastic surround. I am looking for a new install kit, I also plan to put some sort of bushing or padding between the radio and the dash on top and bottom to keep the back of the radio from moving up and down (because the back is not supported with an aftermarket install kit). I like your idea of using shock bushings. I'm thinking of using some foam from the radio packaging.

I used a strip of metal from the bolt on the very back of my cd player and screwed it into the air ducting. very quick and easy. works pretty good to. i remember using a really fat short screw for the ducting.

I meant to say I velcroed the bushings so that they would NOT move around. And it appears they have not.
