I have a 7 with a D300 and an auto tranny. I was planning on flattowing about 900mi., but I just read an article where someone stated that you can't flattow with a D300. If I disconnect the driveshafts, what would it matter?

I know this sounds stupid but "BLOCK YOUR WHEELS" before you remove the driveshaft as the tranny won't hold it in place. I don't think you need to remove the front shaft. But make sure the hubs are NOT locked in. Make sure when flat towing the steering lock is NOT engaged. Buddy of mine didn't unlock his steering when flat towing and couldn't figure out why it was so hard to pull around a corner. Once he seen the wheels wasn't turning side to side he went to unlock the wheel and it broke the steering lock.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the advise. I figured my plan would work fine. I decided to flattow because the last time I moved, I rented an auto transport and my CJ was too wide for it. I strapped it down good and hoped for the best Big Grin

You have to remove the rear driveshaft due to the lubrication system of the D300. It gets it's oiling from when the tranny turns, which you don't want while towing. Like the others said, remopve the rear driveshaft and make sure your front hubs are unlocked. I have flat towed my CJ this way for a total of about 5000 miles with no problems. I leave my front driveshaft on so when I get to my destination, I lock the hubs, put it in 4H, and can move my Jeep until I get around to putting the driveshaft back on.

i towed my cj about 500 miles and burned up a bearing in my dana 300, make sure you unhook your rear driveshaft. i didn't and so i had to put another transfercase in. make sure your steering wheel is unlocked and put everything in neutral just to be safe.

You can tow a Cj 200 miles or less without disconnecting the rear drive shaft as long as you have a manual trans and the transfer case and tranny are both in neutral. As long as the transfer case is in neutral the rear drive shaft will not be spinning the transfer case and there is no worries of burning anything up. this has worked for me a number of times and I'm getting ready to do it again this weekend.

Proceed at your own caution>>>>>>>>

I started out flattowing, but as soon as I made a left out of the driveway I realized I had a problem. My steering has never returned to center; with factory ps box or with PSC box. The CJ was practically hopping behind the uhaul. I ended up renting an auto transport again, but this time the Jeep fit. I was informed that the auto transports vary stightly in width, so you never know exactly what you're gonna get.

Did you unlock your steering wheel mongrel? It "sounds" like you didn't, because that would cause it to pretty much hop as you said. I finished towing mine this weekend with no problems other than with my tow lights. Took me a good hour to finally find the short, but it was smooth sailing after that.

I did unlock the wheel. I don't really understand why my steering doesn't come back to center. It did this with the factory steering set-up & still does it with all new parts. I never had this issue with my YJ which had a lot more lift.

Is your Jeep hard to drive, does it wander alot?
I'm thinking your caster might be off.

i had a 67 cj that i towed a lot, 2 times when i turned really sharp the tires locked past center and skidded this was due in part to a wide stance and steering stops removed for more offroad control. caster off could make this situation even worse. after it happend the first time i just made sure i made nice gradual turns.
