alright, i did something really stupid and towed my cj7 a long distance for some good offroading. i put the t-5 in neutral and forgot about the transfer case and left it in 2 wheel drive. it's making all kinds of noise now when i put in the clutch. one mechanic told me it was the transmission, another told me it was the transfer case. can any of you give me a better idea. i just bought another dana 300 for it, if that doesn't fix it then i'll be putting it up for sale.
thanks.

I cant tell you what your problem is, but if putting that D300 in there dosent fix it the its going to need a new trans....you can find those cheap so whats the point of selling it? Might as well put a T-18 in there.

If it only make sthe noise when your putting the clutch in, then I see no reasion why it would be the transfercase.

thanks for the info, Renegade. i'm not selling the whole jeep, just one of the transfer cases. the noise is worse at higher speeds, it also makes noise when i'm rolling and i let off of the gas, but mostly when i push in the clutch.

you probably killed a bearing and my guess would be in the transfer case. Next time to be safe you should just disconnect the rear driveshaft. thats what I usually did when I flattowed my jeep anywhere.

I don't see how your clutch would have been affected when towing it, sounds strange. I really believe you did something to your transfercase.

i would think that you toasted a bearing in the t-case, but you might have toaset one in the trans since it was spinning the whole time, i'm not sure how those old trannys dispursed the oil. if you put the tcase in "N" and let the clutch out where is the noise comming from, then you could get under the jeep to find out also, disclaimer(i am in no way responsible if something bad happens)/disclaimer just be sure to block the wheels really well and do not do it alone

THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS!!

If i'm not mistaken one of the downfalls of the 300 is the inability to flat tow. Because there is no way for the oil to get to the gears. Or was that when the tcase was in "N"? Anyway I'd try localrichs' idea and see if you can locate the problem.

I got the transfer case out and opened it up, i didn't see any obvious problems, but i'm not sure what i'm looking for either. it doesn't make any noise when i manually turn the gears. i'm still gonna put the new one in and see what happens. Wheeler peeler, i'll let you know when one of my d300's come up for sale. i gotta get my cj back on the trail first. If anyone comes across a nv3550 transmission, shoot me a e-mail at owensj2@cox.net.
