Starting to buildup a CJ5 304.
I live it Ohio and thought that a rockcrawler was the way to go.
After looking a some vido's I'm not so sure.
Seem to me Rockcrawler's walk more than ride,
and Ohio has Lots more dirt and Mud that rocks.

why not have a dual trail rig ... even though it might be somewhat of a compromise a lot of the stuff used for mudders also goes into rockcrawlers and vice versa Smile

BTW: you're asking this on the Rockcrawler boards Big Grin

I don't know either. But I'm pretty happy with the way mine turned out. I live in Iowa and we have to build to go either way. Here we have mud and trails, However we go out of state quite a bit to find rocks. All the guys I wheel with have built their rigs to excell in all kinds of terrain.

well I would say build it as a dual porpuse rig my CJ5 did everything i asked of it in the mud drags and in the sand dunes. I would then come home take out the NOS bottle put the boggers back on and hit the trail with it. it pre ran every obstical at the NWRCA events in 2000-2001 the only advise i will give you if your going to spend the money do it right the frist time. dont half A$$ it to gather OH and also for get about driving it to work everyday can you say trailer queen..

thats my input

Just my input...
what makes a mud bogger? Well, big tires, lots of wheel speed, and enough traction on the ground.

What makes a rock crawler? Ability to flex, low gears to crawl, power for the 'low-end' torque.

Maybe if you put a small/big block V8 in your CJ5, with dana 60's (just a recommendations, rockwells are cool too Smile), get a suspension that flexes over 38-44 inch tires. Since you need wheel speed for your big tires, you dont have to go with rockwells (the gearing might be too low for highspeeds) however, you can get an atlas II, or some type of transfer case with a really low low range, that retains a stock high range.

And finally, safety... get a nice roll cage

just my input.
