Alright my friend has a '66 Cj-5 in his back yard that starts up and runs, but is missing the transmission, I know it has the 4.2 liter V6. My question is what type of transmission will bolt up to the engine, and is it possible to change from what used to be a stick to an auto?

4.2 V-6? That don't sound right. It should be a 225 cid Buick V-6 if its original. If thats the case than any BOP automatic would bolt up but being a cj5 I doubt you have the wheel base to take a longer trans.

I am not 100% sure on what type of engine, I know that it is a v6 as it has the origional v6 badges. And I was told that the only v6 offered in Jeeps was a 4.2l. So Should I tell him to stick with a manual?

Novak makes an adapter kit to put a 18 transfer case(what you have) to a SM465 and it only uses an extra inch of space. You should call them and see what it would take to bolt it to your bellhousing. Or put a stock trans in it and go. Should be easy to find and dirt cheap.

If you still have the bellhousing,a SM465 or SM420 will bolt right up with a little modification.Hold out for the SM420 if you can find one.It has a lower 1st gear and it is 3 inches shorter and lighter than the 465.Rube makes an easy and inexpensive adapter to mount the T/C.
