My father left me his unfinished jeep project. (77 CJ7 w/ AMC 360 and AMC TH400 and quadratrac. He also left me a mildly built 350 4-bolt brand new sitting on a stand. I also have a newly rebuilt quadratrac tc. I think my dad intended to put the chevy 350 into the jeep. So my question is can I mate the chevy 350 to the AMC TH-400? The AMC Motor is installed and runs. Is it worth doing a conversion like this? If I can't use the TH400 can I put some other chevy transmission into the mix? What would you do?
If it runs good as is and is reliable, I would leave it be for now. If you are trying to honor your father, I would do as much research as possible to find out what his intent was and work towards that goal. I don't have alot of experience mating GM engines with AMC trannies, but I'm sure it can be done.

i had a 79 cj7 with the amc 304/ th400/ quadratrac. i believe one difference for this set up between the amc th400 and quadratrac is a longer output shaft on the tail end of the th400 to transmit the power to the transfercase. sorry but i do no know if the housing will bolt to the 350.
also not sure how that full time 4wheel drive transfercase will hold up. i guess it depends on how much lead is in your right foot, or where you plan on using this jeep. the previous owner of my old cj had busted the chain and blew the whole back half of the transfercase apart.

There is an adapter ring in between the amc motor and t400 tranny that mate the two together.Because there is an adapter the transmission input shaft is longer. You would have to replace the input shaft on the tranny if you want to use it behind a chevy engine. You would be better off selling the t400 and buying a chevy t350 4wheeldrive tranny. A plus is that its over all length is shorter too so you can have a longer rear driveshaft.
