I've got a stock 81 Cj7 and I want to let her breathe a little better. I'm looking to replace the carb and air intake system and was wondering if there is anyone that has any suggestions they have tried or seen in action that work well.

Thanks Rockram. I'm an aspiring gearhead so pardon my lack of understanding. Is the Motorcraft 2150 an EFI unit? The FIPK is the air intake(fuel injection performance kit) right? Also how much did that run you in parts and time? I appreciate it.

The Motorcraft 2150 is a ford carburator found on a 79 ford ltd. You are correct on the FIPK. All it boils down too is a plastic pipe with a cone filter on the end. Parts ? been long time ago I think i've got maybe 250 into it. You can source the carb from local boneyard I'd do a rebuild on it. The fipk I found at 4wheel parts.
The carb should be fairly easy to find however let me know if you need help. I'm sure I can find one around here.

One more thing you will want the carb with 1.08 stamped on the driver's side.

I know this is a really old post, but does anyone have a pic of this air cleaner installed on the Motorcraft? I am going to be doing this modification with the FIPK (should it be K&N or are others like Pacesetter any good?)and would like to know what additional hardware I might need to get to attach the filter tube with. Does everyone route the air tube over the valve cover with the filter on the other side over the ignition?

Thanks Rockram, I'd appreciate it.

If you went with the K&N, is it really worth the extra $, in your opinion? For this application, would a cheaper knockoff be adequate?

Thanks again.

I ended up finding a cheap cone filter intake for a 88 chevy 305 on eBay. I used the air box from that kit along with some temperature resistant ducting from intenseperformance.com and routed it through the firewall underneath the battery tray where the heater fan would stick out through the firewall (I took my stock heater out and I used a jigsaw to expand the hole). At this point you could use the filter that came with the cheap ebay kit or buy a better aftermarket one (i'll probably be going back to intenseperformance.com for one pretty soon).

So... the end result is a pretty effective snorkel system for your carbed jeep. Just make sure you dont have a lot of water coming into the cab (like up to the dashboard). You could easily build a removable extension for the snorkel out of PVC should you find it neccessary.

I just hooked up a K&N 8" filter on top of the carb. The only thing that I dislike about the whole set up is that I am pulling hot air back into the engine and in texas it's already hot enough. I am thinking of adapting a system used by EFI units minus all the elctronic gear that goes with them. This would allow a box near the front that is sealed off from the engine compartment(delivering cooler air), and then stick a cone filter on the end. I'll let you know how that goes if I ever get around to it.
