Question:
I am debating whether or not to get a new unlimited and build it up. I like my sahara but I feel like there isn't enough space both inside the cab and outside for driveshaft length.

Choices:
Unlimited (Rubicon or Sport)
TJ (SE,Sport, Sahara, Rubicon)
Other Jeep (ZJ, CJ...)

I knew something was wrong, I posted this in the CJ section... I thought it was the Jeeps general, sorry! Still wouldn't mind some input though Big Grin

Unicycle Avenger, If you're looking for room then the LJ is better. Since I've had both here are my thoughts about the two versions.

LJ, we took a trip to "Big D" a few weeks back and there were four of us, two wennie dogs, a dog kennel (for both dogs), and our luggage. I could not have done that in my TJ without the safari rack (or a trailer). I think my LJ rides a tad better. I think I get a bit of side window flap (in high winds, mostly cross winds) due to the larger surface area not having as much support as my TJ. I like my LJ but I think I still like the overall looks of the shorter TJ's better. Maybe that'll change once I lift it and get some bigger tires on it. I've gotten high centered once in my LJ. Was it due to the longer wheelbase or was it due to stock hight?? Maybe a little bit of both. If I were to buy another Jeep today, I'd probably go with another LJ just because it's my daily driver and I've got two boys that usually go along. So the extra room is nice. If it were not for the boys, I'd go with a short TJ.

Right right... I previously had a ZJ about 2 years ago and I loved how it was the cadilac of jeeps, but it was too nice for offroad, and I wanted to take the top off (without a sawzall Smile), another factor to go TJ was the Unibody setup that I didn't really like.

I think in the future (next 2 years) I will plan on getting an LJ just because I need a daily driver and having more room for a 4 spd auto or even the new 6 speed that will make a big difference for highway miles.

Im also into the looks of the unlimiteds. I am a huge fan of the cj-8's and they are like the updated model minus the truck bed part, but hey close enough. A lifted scrambler looks awesome both on road and off. I figure a new LJ with 4-6" long arms would look and perform just the same as my TJ just a hunch though.

I don't think you'd be disappointed. If you already like the looks, the battle is half won. For me, the Jury was still out on the looks between the two when I bought mine. Now that I've had it a few months, I like it but, as I siad before, I think I'd buy a TJ if it were just me or just me and the wife. I had a Kargo Master safari rack on my 01 and that really worked out well. We took several trips in it with all our stuff up top without and problems. Even though there were times I had several hundred pounds up there. So if you're into the safari racks, that's an option for ya.

Yeah the rack is a definate with any vehicle I have, Right now I have the warrior products rack, REALLY Sturdy only problem is its bolted into the body so if I take it off it looks goofy with holes in the tub.

What I'd like to do when I graduate is make this jeep into a trailer queen and buy an LJ to have for my daily driver, or vis versa

Sounds like a good plan to me! I did have to drill two holes with my Kargo Master rack but they were right above the tail lights. So I could take the rack off and leave the brackets on without holes everywhere. I'm thinking I'll probably get another rack for my LJ some day. I think it'll either be another KM or I think Offroad Unlimited has a Defender rack that has simalar mounts thta might be worth checking into.

Yeah, after i saw that picture i looked back at my old magazine bin and saw it was an AEV production so... in a while that could be a choice if i get bored with my tj and having 8-15,000 laying around. Smile

Or you could go toRoad Armor for one. I think they're about $8K for the kit.

Personaly, I like the Brute better than the Gladiator. I think the only thing I'd change about the Brute is to flush mount the tail lights.
