I'm trying to get a friend into Jeeps and he's dead set on a CJ. I found a decent one, but I'm trying to figure out some details about it.
Is there a website that list CJ factory specs? I'm trying to find out what gear sets were common in the 83 CJ with the 4 cylinder and info on T Case, transmission etc.
97 TJ, 3" Teraflex lift, 33 Trxus M/Ts, CB, Warn winch and bumpers, Yukon Awesome 35 OX locker, front Aussie Locker, 4.11 gears, FXD rockers and tank skid.
That year 4cyl CJ is going to have the GM 151 powerplant. It also has the T4 tranny with a D300 xfercase. gearing is probably going to be 3.73 or 4.10 from factory. Typical Dana 30 front, Corp 20 rear.
the plus-side to this jeep, is its easy to transplant a 6cyl into it since the 151 uses a 10-spline clutch meaning the T4 behind it has a 10-spline input. the 258 and 4.0 use a 10-spline clutch rather then the 14-spline used with the AMC 150 4 cyl.

Thanks for the info, that's exactly what's been done. Someone has had a later model carburated 6 cylinder put in it. The Jeep felt really strong, so I was trying to figure out the gearing, but the owner didn't know.
I wonder if they replaced the T4 also.......it would have been a smart move to put a T176 in it, better yet a T18 but thats wishfull thinking. The T4 is about as strong as the T5 which is about as strong as dry spaghetti noodles unfortunately. It will hold up to the 6cyl, but you have to keep your shifting nice and smooth or it goes ker-plunk.
How about the rear axle.....did the PO install 1pc axles? If he gets this jeep, that should really be first on his list. besides that and the T4, everything else is going to be pretty stout and his gearing should be good up to 33's (6cyl CJs typically had higher gears then 4cyl CJs turning the same size tires)

Where is reverse? I have a T18 and reverse is to the right and up. My T176 was to the right and down. The T18 in 1st gear you can crawl faster than it moves. If the skidplate is flat most likely a dana 20 if the skidplate has a v on the right side of the vehicle and the tcase clears by about 1" then you've got a dana300. Unless a clocking ring has been installed.
86' CJ7, 258,T18,D44's 4.56 f/r, Detroit front, Warn shafts, CTM joints, rear spool, 4wheel disc, SOA w/ wagoneer springs, custom shackle reversal, 38"tsl, Allied Beadlocks,8274-50 Warn, Custom 6 point cage, custom bumpers, and still building.

I bet it has the T4. The rear axle is a 20 and it has a locker, but who knows about the axles. T case matches the Dana 300 description. Anyone know the ratio of the D 300?

Those **** plastic covers can be a pita.....i swear it took me more time and effort just to remove those things then it did to swap out the axles themselves.

I think my friend has found a CJ 8 he really likes. I don't know any of the specs on it yet, but is there anything special we should be looking for that pertains specifically to CJ 8's.
