Any Jeep can be crappy. There are a lot of things you need to check no matter what the year. You can find a early CJ that is cherry and a TJ that is trashed. If you don't know much about Jeeps, get a friend that knows about them and take him with you. This will help you make a good decision about the ones you look at. Some people say the CJs have stronger components and are better off road than the YJs. I have seen a lot of YJs in the woods and they do just fine. It just might be a matter of taste.

If you can, hold out for a '92 or newer YJ with the 6 cyl. and 5-spd trans. This gives you fuel injection and a good platform to build up..

No matter what you get you'll be rebuilding it, and replacing half of what came with it. I've noticed that there are more aftermarket accessories for CJ's 1979 and up. If you get one that's carbeurated, try for a V8. The carb on the I6 258 just sucks. You can lift anything, re-gear anything, re-paint anything.

The great thing about where you live is not much rust. If you are looking at a CJ. Look for a late model 86, these have the dana 44 rear dana 300 transfercase the t-176 tranny 258 inline 6. I believe this to be the best to start with however they are becoming quite rare and spendy. If $$$ is an issue and you are planning on major mods find a YJ with a fuel injected 4 banger these are really cheap and since your going to be replacing everything anyway might as well keep the purchase price down. The beauty of a Jeep is the availibity of aftermarket parts. If you can dream it someone has already built the parts you need to built it.

86' CJ7, 258,T18,D44's 4.56 f/r, Detroit front, Warn shafts, CTM joints, rear spool, 4wheel disc, SOA w/ wagoneer springs, custom shackle reversal, 38"tsl, Allied Beadlocks,8274-50 Warn, Custom 6 point cage, custom bumpers, and still building.
