I just received my confirmation as did Dennis. We're probaby staying up Chalk Creek Canyon, since most of the rides are up that direction anyway. Well, that and Salida is kind of a dump. Not as bad as Leadville, but not nice, either.

I think Mile-Hi has a web site and I haven't heard that they've closed registrations, yet.

This is a great region to run in. You could easily spend a summer exploring that place.

Right over Tomichi Pass is a little town called White Pine. Its a summer camp kind of place. Just south of it there used to be a suburb named North Star (like the camp in the movie.) It had the first 2 story outhouse I'd ever seen.

Outdoor plumbing works on the gravity principle. In this case, the employee john wasn't downstairs (as it is where most of us work.) It was just a single door up on the building. Unuseable in summer, but higher than the drifts in winter! Remember, this is above 10,000 feet. Big Grin

Its a great place to explore old mine and ghost town buildings. Some of the trails are OK for showroom stock vehicles. Others are kind of challenging. Smile

In this link that Sapcely provided we have the pix from the Sunday run:

If you look at the first 3 or 4 you'll see Old Yellers jeep. I think in the second one is Randy's from Beaver, UT.

We met Dennis here last year on this forum. Now the poor guy and his wife are hooked! Smile

These are fun rides where you make a lot of new friends.

Yep! Dick and the gang took good care of us. We're looking forward to Salida this year. We'll be flying the Pirate flag high (Arrr). I wonder if Frenchie will know all the historical scoop on the sites like he did last year. Thresa and I kinda enjoyed learning about the mines, ghost towns, and such. However this year, I don't think Mark will convince Thresa to hold onto "his" CB Mic. Big Grin I'm not too sure Frenchie believed we didn't take it. That was a baaaad joke to play on the newbies.

Just to explain, I first met Frenchy in 1985 on Moab rim. His old jeep had tossed a tie rod end and he was broken down. We took him back to town (yes, down the rim) and someone else took him back to his jeep. Frenchy is a fixture. His fault, or one of them, is that he has a 100% duty cycle on his CB. He can't put the mike down. Its OK for the first few hours.

But after a half day it starts to wear on you. and after 7 or 8 hours most people have turned off their CBs.

The day in question we broke away from the main group that was going back the easy way. We elected the long way up and over Imogene. At the top Frenchy was still talking. So one of our buddy's, Mark, caught him out of his jeep talking and stole his mike! Smile Then gave it to Dennis' wife. Wow was he upset when he grabbed for it to start chattering again. Big Grin

Frenchy likes all the girls, so he was just upset that we got the best of him.

That was also the ride where going down into Ouray we happened upon the yellow LJ, just like Ol Yeller and my Pucker that was on its side. The driver died in the accident, hit on the head by a rock that fell from about 1000' above. It pierced the soft top, his head an shoulder, and the floor of the Jeep.

The only photo we got was the one I stole from the Ouray County paper.

Well, this thread hasn't moved much since early spring.

Dennis/Old yeller and I are leaving soon for Colorado. Some of our buddies we meet up with are already there.

Just this week there was a big mud slide in Alpine, one of the places we'll be going past on a lot of the rides. In fact, it will probably cause some of them to be cancelled. The road off toward Mt. Antero starts on 162, one of the dameaged roads, right at Alpine (I think thats 277.)

It'll be interesting. We're not camping in the cow pasture with most of them. We'll be enjoying the hot springs while most are enjoying the hot sand. Life's tough.
