Hey all,
I am going to be driving on the interstate 70 threw Utah and since I'll driving right by Moab I decided to spend a couple of days there to do some wheeling. Would anyone like to join me? Life is much more bearable when you have a Jeep. |

I see you're not getting a lot of replies. Several things may be taking place. One is that Moab is pretty miserable in mid summer. Depending on the weather at that particular time, you could be looking at temps over 110.
Another is that the Moab club, Red Rock 4 Wheelers, is having their second event of the year just 2 weeks after your visit. While the Labor Day Campout isn't on a scale with the Easter Jeeep Safari, it still attracts a fair number of Moab destined travelers. Looking back, I've noticed that my good intentions of visiting that area in mid summer usually results in us spending our time up in the LaSal mountains. One of the best things about Moab is that when its hot down on the desert floor, you can just drive for a short time and find a snowbank. Some of the better destinations are now closed, like Miners Basin. You can still walk up to it if you park down by the lake. Its probably too far to expect anyone to hike up to the saddle and then down into Bachelor Basin in the next drainage. Also keep in mind that its fire season and there's a big one burning over just past the east side of the mountains, the Campbell fire. (read about it in the dailysentinel.com or the Montrose, CO paper.) If you want to keep track of the goings on, there is also a web based version of the Moab paper. Find that at usnpl.com or kidon.com. Trails I'd advise against you taking at this time of the year are the ones up to the north of town, specifically on either side of 191. Its just too hot and dusty up that way. Any breakdown can become life threatening if you don't have cell phone signal or can't fix it yourself. The trails close to town like Moab Rim, Hells Revenge, Fins and things, Poison Spider might be better. If you get too hot, go up in the LaSals. Up and over Geyser Pass and down past Dark Canyon lake is a nice summer drive. Cool temps, big trees, etc. If you've got an evening and want to cook a steak, drive up to Oowah Lake. They've got (or at least used to have) grills and picnic tables and a nice mountain lake. Worse places to spend an evening. Dick Burg Remember, if you're not in the lead, the view's always the same. |
