I bought the connector at Radio Shack/The Source. Three in a pack for about 3.00.

Thanks loulou. i can surely tell you that this things hauls. OMG the thing was just shredding up the dirt road. plus not to mention the wheelies. they didn't work to good on the dirt (lack of traction?) but i could get on started on the walkway and continuue up the dirve way a good amount.

Congrats ( at last eh ) - if you're planning on ripping up the dirt, I might suggest a can of compressed air - there's an awful lot of stuff in these things that need to be cleaned or kept clean........
I bomb mine around on the grass ( till I stretch it ) and blow it out every couple of days....

I think that this is the new "fav" of this year ..

enjoy Big Grin

I realy like what I am reading about the WK. The price of WK is about the same as my Clodbuster, but the clod was a kit, minus controler. To be a crawler this Clod needs a bit of work done to it. .
I have a few questions,

Can they crawl ok, stock, right out of the box.
Any different bodies avalable for this truck.
Anybody made a custom frame yet.

Thanks.

Hey,

Right out of the box - almost -

remove the X brace under the back end
( 4 screws ) allows frame more flex

swap the tires from side to side to reverse the tread from ^ to v

move battery to front ( easiest temporary way is to hang from chassis with quick-ties ) loads front with weight

otherwise

replace the tires - ( you can buys other rims fairly cheap, so you can leave original ones for real speed , bashing)

get a bigger battery - at least 3000 mAh - with the stock you can't power your way out of some situations

beyond this stretch the frame, ( this replaces the plastic bits with metal ones )

and move steering servo to sit over front diff.... ( again weight shift )

you can take it slow, and not break the bank

lots of good stuff over at ( ahem ) rccrawler.com - the have a good "Wheely King" section in the forums ( too much to repeat over here, why duplicate the info )

proportional speed and steering is what put me off the "clod" kit

plus it comes complete / battery / charger / radio - "great" start !!

( and yes, someone is doing a frame as well as others are doing more parts for it )

hope something there helps Smile ( my 2 cents Big Grin)

ps: it appears that you can beat the "living h*ll" out of them, and they will take it Big Grin - have heard of people doing really silly things with them, and no damage...... I have just done the brace, and put some new rims with red rocks ( no foam ) locked on with shoe-goo, and moved the battery ( 3200 mAh ) and am having a good time with it - have collected all parts needed for the stretch and servo move - just can't seem to find the time - oh well - it's A LOT of FUN Big Grin

( I know that the stretch is a must - short stock wheelbase )

Last night I put a skid plate on the transmission mount. The rocks I crawl on were really shredding the mount and the rod ends.

I have a 55t Integy Matrix Motor on the way as well as a 96t spur gear and a 15t pinion. These should make big difference in this thing's torque.

So to date, my mods are:

- remove x brace
- stretch wheelbase to 12.5 (from 9.5)
- trimmed body
- repositioned shocks
- reversed chassis to mount battery in the front
- changed to heavy weight oil in rear shocks to addres torque twist
-cut tires and reversed tread
-mounted steering servo to front axle
-made/attached front skidplate/bumper
-made/attached skidplate to transmission mount
-mounted cooling fan for ESC
-Dean's Connectors

Mods to do:

- install new 55t motor
- install new 96t spur gear and 15t pinion

Much of this work has been covered in previous posts in this thread.

At this point, this thing can crawl like an S.O.B. and will only get better.

Here's my fav shot:

Sean

Hey Sean - do you know ( or have you read ) if the 96 spur will fit inside the dust cover ?? - I thought that I had heard or read that one of the sizes won't -

that combo should give you some awesome torque, and I believe with the 55 you can still "spin" those tires Big Grin

( haven't heard anything yet on my 55 )

ps: your "crawling" spots make me cry Smile

The 96 won't fit inside the dust cover but no biggie as I never crawl anywhere where there is dirt/dust/mud- just dry rock face. I've noticed a lot of people running without the covers as well. Apparently the 96/15 is the lowest gear you can run without any mods - other than losing the dust cover.

Should be interesting!!

Sean

p.s You're in Ottawa? I was there in early May for a conference.

Not much crawling to be done at the Laurier! Went down to the Rainbow, though, and listened to some good blues.

yep, theres some da@mn fine crawling down here. All I need to do now is get someone to join me. Crawling by yourself is fine but you need someone else to goad you along to push the limits. My 9 yr old son likes taking the King Snake on the rocks and we each have turns trying different climbs - trying different approaches, tactics etc. He really seems to enjoy it - which is good but there is no real competition because we're driving the same rig.

Update on video below. Since making this video, I have made some changes to my suspension to fix torque twist - the tendency for the left front wheel to twist up and away resulting in lost traction and backflips on steep climbs. I can now crawl up/over this rock with no slippage whatsoever. Actually, my son made it tonight on his first try. See, there is always room for improvement.

If you are going with the axle mounted servo , all you have to do is mount the servo on the "rear" axle - then switch the motor leads and fip the body around.

Otherwise, you need to pull the axles and swap them from front to back. Move the steering linkages to the other side and flip the servo over as well. I've never done this so I can't really comment. motor leads need to be reversed as well.

Hope this helps. A lot has been said about this at the other rc crawler site.

Sean

To anyone who may be listening:

My new ESC and high torque servo arrived today and are waiting for me at home!! This completes my parts replacement list (I hope).

I have the 55t motor and new 96/15 gears installed. The dustcover fits over the 96t spur gear with a just little bit of dremelling

I've had my new Traxxas TQ3 TX and RX for over a week now.

I've made three replacement front driveshafts - in the event that I play too harsh with the new motor/gears.

I also made some new mounting positions for my shocks which, hopefully, will make some improvements.

Sorry no images as I am at work right now.

Finally, it looks like my crawler will be back on the rocks soon.

Sean

Hope it all goes together well.......

almost bought a 55t from "Stormer" until I got to the pay section , am not dropping my credit card info all over anymore - would have been nice if they took paypal - anyway - sooner or later the hobby stores will catch up on the stock ( HA - I hope Big Grin )

read / heard that Tamiya is not making those axle stays anymore, so you will have a collectors item soon Smile

ebay had 2 Integy 50t's that disappeared almost the moment that they were put on Frown
