phatchantz:
Well, I basically live in the woods and there is 40+ acres of family-owned wooded land around. Where I shot the videos there is a lot of rocks/stumps that make a great proving ground. I really like it because the moss/small trees on the rocks almost make the whole thing look to scale. I can also walk to the seashore to test my rig on the rugged rocks there as well. I may do this tomorrow if I get a chance. See my house in the background. Sorry for the display of bad driving Its funny but I've read posts from people who say that they'd love to build a crawler but they've got nowhere to crawl or that they have to go to a crawling "park". I can drop my crawler off the back step and crawl rocks through the window!!! I guess I've got it too good. ksully: I am quite impressed with the 27t motor. I can't imagine what the 55t is like in terms of torque. I am still learning the quirks and quarks of this thing so my driving skills are certainly lacking. I should take some video of the King Snake in speed mode to show you how well it can spit gravel!! The fan I am running IS a computer fan (surplus from Princess Auto, no doubt)- its a small one - about 1" diameter but it pumps a lot of air across the ESC. This message has been edited. is it just me or is the wheely king chassis large, is there any trimming that youve seen? did it have any positive effects?

I've done nothing with the chassis - other han reverse its direction. Can't wait to get out crawling again today. Will provide updates as they happen. ___________________________________________________________ "I'm just gonna keep on crawlin' now baby until the day I die, because I'm a crawlin' kingsnake baby, and I rules my den" John Lee Hooker |

get ready for a real "BLAST" - it's sooooooo much different ( I have never had other than NB which got me into this - thanks NB )
you're in for a real treat - no regrets here .. NONE easiest mod when your done running it crazy - take off the x-shaped anti-sway bar under the back end ( four screws ), and switch the tires side to side so the tread is reversed - no cost - the only downside is the frame will flex now when you stomp on it.. other than that for free mods - it works well - |

ksully - congrats and I hope you are prepared to take this addiction to a new level!!!!
I took the Crawlin' Kingsnake to the beach today (actually not to the beach but to the rocks near the beach. I am even more impressed now. Sorry no vids but here is a static shot of the CKS sitting atop a nice rock overlooking the North Atlantic. This is the texture of rocks I was crawling on - very nice!! The rig took a 3 foot straight drop and landed on its "nose" The steering gear took a direct hit but only bent slightly. The resulting bend has no effect on steering and it even looks better. As a result of this accident, tonight I decided to fab a "steering saver" out of 1/8 aluminum. Very strong and looks pretty good too. It should not affect my approach angle but that will be determined over time. The muffin fan mounted over the ESC is perfect - crawled for about 45 minutes today with absolutely no heat buildup. My 9 volt battery (see the right side of the front axle) is still running even after a few hrs of running the fan. I may very well run if off the main battery once I figure out a proper way to connect it. Suggestions? Cheers all, Sean ___________________________________________________________ "I'm just gonna keep on crawlin' now baby until the day I die, because I'm a crawlin' kingsnake baby, and I rules my den" John Lee Hooker |

it's a toss up between looking at the WK and the scenery behind it
excellent job on the tires by the way..... haven't located a fan yet, but will pursue that angle this week ( time permitting ) and then maybe will have ideas...... good to know it works.... lotsa rain comin' for us, so might be good time to start the mods |

I purchased my fan at Princess Auto - it measures about 1.25' square. Cost me all of 3.99. I know I keep saying it but those tires work REALLY well.

i have a fan from a computer that should work nicely. plus i know it works cause who could resist not trying it. i will have to perform cutting the tires when it comes. hopefully they will come out as good as yours SEAND.

marmech: you dirty dog!! I am really curious about what the 55t has to offer. Detils!! Details!!
ksully: my tires never cease to amaze me. They seem to be getting softer each time I use them. Update on the fan - I ran a full 45 minutes today in the hot sun at SLOW crawl. Not a hitch and the ESC, again, was cool to touch at the end of the run. My new challenge is dealing with torque twist - the tendency of the rig to lift its left front wheel when climbing steep inclines. I am working with pre-loading my springs right now. Hopefully this will help. could be even as simple as throwing in a little spacer in one of the four links, just to push it a bit forward, but the 55t's.... power! wouldnt stall, would just spin no matter where i put it, quickish too! i see why everyone uses these, for the torque and the wheelspeed, i think you will find the 55 great for crawling and still have the fun tire spinning you are enjoying now!

marmech:
From where did you order your 55t and at what cost? Most places I've checked have it on backorder I've pre-loaded my springs and leveled the body up. Seems to work much better - in the living room at least. Will check in the real world tomorrow. sean Sean ___________________________________________________________ "I'm just gonna keep on crawlin' now baby until the day I die, because I'm a crawlin' kingsnake baby, and I rules my den" John Lee Hooker |
