I have found the Axial Rock Racer for $22 more than the Axial Scorpion AX10.

The Racer comes with a radio, heavy duty servo, 27 T motor, speed controller and a pre-painted body.

The AX10 has more aluminum parts but the body needs paint $5, a motor $20, a good servo $30, a speed controller $70 and a radio $50.

Is the AX10 worth the extra money?
Will the Rock Racer break easier?

Which is best?

Since know one posted yet.. guess you have to make that decision your self.. Will moding the RTR to AX10 standards cost more then building the ax10 the way you want it. It seems the RTR is more of a basher/crawler, Then being a full blooded crawler. Some of the things you quoted needing, might be things you will upgrade down the line anyway.. so guess one should factor that into it.

If your still thinking about the rtr vs ax10 kit here's my opinion as it's a decision I've been thinking about. The kit truck need's dollars to get going and if your that serious about crawling (going to enter a comp) than your going to end up replacing all those fancy stock aluminum parts on the kit anyway for upgraded bent links and such. If you buy the rtr you get the same platform, solid rear axle, better diff lockers (HD not avail when the kit was released), 2 pinions(14t for crawlin,21t I think for the racer), 2 sets of hexes(plastic and aluminum), esc, receiver, remote, all for an extra 20 bucks, none of these items are included with the kit truck. Even if you set it up stock as a crawler it should have pretty much the same capability of the kit, just put in a 55t and go. The racer is much better value for the $ and if your going to build a comp rig or upgrade, buy a better remote, esc, whatever, you end up with spare remotes and esc's for other projects. The only thing you get with the kit is green aluminum, so unless your all about the green parts buy the racer. I've seen 2 rtr go for $200 on ebay, crazy.

I have no plans to compete, but I'd like a capable rock crawler.

Plastic
Are those plastic suspension links going to flex and take a hit or bend/snap?
The plastic seems like it has a lot of resin and would take some punishment.

ESC
The local Hobby shop guy is telling me the ESC on the RTR has drag brakes?
I'm having a hard time believing that.
If it has drag brakes, wouldn't they advertise it?
Is the ESC a zero delay for reverse?

Servo
The RTR says it has a HD steering servo?
Is it a HD servo or is that just so much advertising?

Slipper Clutch
The RTR comes with a slipper clutch.
Is that anything I want for crawling?
If it's good why doesn't the kit have it?

Thanks,

I would say email http://www.axialracing.com/

And ask them your ?s above.
weigh the good with the bads against each r/c.
then get the one with the most goods then the bads.

Me my self, I like slipper clutches. If you know how to tune one. They are great for setting up for different terrain.

Guess my decision is made.

I ended up picking up a AX10 on a local board for $300. It had been used once and never painted.
It came complete with everything including Lipo.

Now I'm just learning it's quirks and how to make it climb best.

What a great toy! I can waste hours crawling.

One day, someone showed me a glass of water that was half full. And he said, "Is it half full or half empty?" So I drank the water. No more problem. ~Alexander Jodorowsky.....
