The stock motor on my Wheely King started arcing out inside. The stock ESC then got quite hot. Now the ESC beeps (as normal) but the motor doesn't work and the steering servo jerks with each beep of the ESC. I ran a voltmeter on the motor leads from the ESC and the numbers are all over the place and do not change when you increase the throttle. Now the motor kicks in/out on its own when the transmitter is turned on. The motor will run directly off the battery. The ESC gets quite hot once you connect the battery leads for a short time.
Can anyone tell me if its the ESC or the receiver. Any specific tests I can run? Sean ___________________________________________________________ "I'm just gonna keep on crawlin' now baby until the day I die, because I'm a crawlin' kingsnake baby, and I rules my den" John Lee Hooker |

I would call H.P.I. - I have heard that they are quite good at replacing parts......... outside of that - a short somewhere ?? -
the esc getting hot makes me think "short" - your little "water" clean out didn't dislodge and good size debris that might have stayed in the housing ?? ( maybe the "esc" does not like shocks - that tumble off the rocks ) really sorry to hear about this th last maybe is that it just needs to shut down once and awhile fan or no fan another forum: "I found that the stock speed control would get really hot if you tried to go slow" just thoughts Ps: well wadya know - I'm "lubbing" trails now PPS: when I troubleshoot computer probs - I think - what was the last thing that I changed, and then keep going back.... works ALOT of the time ! its probably the esc, was it low on battery juice? try a full pack when its completely cold? your motor troubles probably carried over to the esc, on the wheely king is it an esc/rec complete unit or are they seperate? if they are a new esc is probably in order which isnt that bad since a new moped is only 30 bones, and other stronger ones are getting to be cheaper too, oh i could look around in the classifieds, i believe wheely king electronics go all the time!

I would guess that the ESC problems are associated with the motor. I am thinking that maybe there is a short in the motor that caused the overheating in the ESC. My concern is whether this is permanent or not. I can't see why the steering servo is jerking though.
Anybody know of a way of daignosing the problem? Currents, volts etc etc. Sean ___________________________________________________________ "I'm just gonna keep on crawlin' now baby until the day I die, because I'm a crawlin' kingsnake baby, and I rules my den" John Lee Hooker |

Here's what I wrote on another site:
Actually the motor just stopped working - or better yet, it just stuck and hummed. I managed to get it working again but it was arcing pretty fierce - not your normal arcing. A day or so after this, the current problems showed - the ESC got super hot and now the truck does not want to respond properly. The Wheely King ESC goes beep beep - pause - beep, beep - pause when the ESC is on but the transmitter is not turned on. It also "squeals" when both are turned on and the throttle is depressed. So the beeping is normal. When I turn on the ESC and the transmitter, it beep beep pauses - and on each beep the steering servo jerks. The motor does the same thing - full throttle, off, full throttle, off . There is no normal response from the motor when given the throtttle. Also, as I said the volts from the ESC to the motor are jumping over the place. The motor runs but arcs like a SOB when you run it directly from the battery. Anybody know of any way to see if the ESC is operating normally? IS the ESC overheating because there is a short in the motor and its now drawing too many amps. I guess dropping another motor in may determine this. When I checked the ESC output to the motor the other day, the volts were consistent with the throttle trigger. Sorry for sounding too confusing. As for gearing - this is not the issue as my gears are stock my ESC has only been overheating/acting up since the motor problems started. As an aside, my motor now has a fine ticking in it so I guess its pretty toasted. My 55t will be in next week but not musch good without a functioning ESC. I was just checking Ebay - and there are a few people posting " looking for Wheely King esc s" under the want it now section - so it may be a general problem that is just surfacing.......
I sure wouldn't hook up your 55t to this until you have a handle on it.... got any other small motors hanging around you could try - 7.2v shouldn't bother much.. ( your batteries (all) have a good charge ? ) ( I can't remember from all the posts - did you switch stuff around, ie: change the wires on the esc to run the motor in the other direction ? ) |

I made a quick try at hooking another motor up - a 6 volt 280 I believe but no go. The volts coming out of the ESC motor leads are jumping all over th place and never as high as 7.2. YET for some reason the motor will kick in and out on its own with no input from the throttle trigger.
I need to know how to isolated the problem - is it just the motor (which is now basically screwed and up for replacement), is it the ESC, is it the receiver, the transmitter etc etc. I have no problems with buying a new ESC but I want to know if this is indeed the problem. breakage is always a good excuse for upgrade but I'd rather not have the downtime right now while I wait for a new part. i believe its pretty hard to fry a receiver, your servo is jerking since the bec is probably buggered up too, just wait until the 55t comes and test it out! you have your gears right? you havent thrown them in yet?

I hooked the ESC up to a motor of very similar specs as the stock and it too spun, stopped, spun stopped - just like the stock.
The steering servo will move when you use the transmitter - just in betwen the jerks.. Forgive my ignorance on this but its my first go at hobby-grade (or near hobby grade) RC electronics. So the leads have to be hooked to the motor from the ESC before anything gets power? The reason I ask is because my steering servo receives no power unless I have the motor leads hooked up from the ESC to the motor. It would appear that I have fried my ESC. Now what is a BEC? I certainly don't see one on my Wheely King. sounds like its probably the esc. i may not know much but. i just have a feeling. cause when i had my mechanical speed control in my rustler the thing started acting up. then i got a new esc so it works fine now. maybe the srvo is going. i had to replace the rustler one once. cause it was making a weird noice everytime i went to turn.
hopefully this rambling helps. |

Pretty sure its the ESC. It just spits out voltage at random when the transmitter is turned on.
So now I have a toasted motor AND ESC. the motor does not bother me so much because I have an upgrade on the way. The ESC is a PITA because I doubt the LHS will have one so that means mail order which means a 2 week downtime!! Now that hurts! Anybody have suggestions for cheaper - yet good - ESC's. Thinking along the lines of the Novak XRS or the Traxxas XL-5. I have looked to see if I could order an esc for the WK - can't find one.....
as to the bec - I believe it's a "brushless" esc you might want to have a look at this wheely king has bad radio and esc http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-72039.html just some light reading (f.y.i.) who knows ( I feel your pain ) |

bec battery elimination circuit to power your servo, so thats probably why the servo is jerking and jazz

thanks for that - I wasn't totally sure - looked around and found one here after your post.. The World's Smallest, Lightest Switch-Mode Super BEC http://www.robotmarketplace.com/marketplace_rc-acces.html wasn't familiar with this device or term for it ( bec ) |

I am repclaing all the elctronics in my WK now. The following are ordered and on the way: Integy 55t motor, Traxxas TQ3 3 channel TX and RX (perhaps 4ws in the near future), Moped ESC and a Tower Pro mg945 steering servo.
Should be good to go again in a few weeks time when it all gets here. Since my crawler will be down for a few weeks I won't be posting for sime time. Still here:
I ordered my motor from Stormer Hobbies, my gears from XSHobby, my ESC from Crawford Performance, my servo from Jet Tech Models (ebay) and my Tx/RX combo from an ebay seller in Etobicoke(?) ON. I hope it all arrives in a reasonable time and in good working order. I hate the downtime but I hope the wait will be worth it. The new servo alone will be a vast improvement as its torque is almost double the stocker!!! ksully: I'm curious about your message so I will send a pm. the servo is great, it really works well, my batteries havent arrived yet (checking the mail everyday) so i dont know about the moped, looks like if you dont get a lemon out of the box then its a great esc. good luck!
