I have trouble in the mid-range department. After 20 years of working on airplanes, and of course playing WAY too loud in my youth ( Remember the "Orange" amps? I had the 120 watt head on mine Eek ), has taken it's toll on my ears. But both ends of the audio spectum are still pretty well intact. So many people don't realize how much the *environment* can effect audio systems. Do we dare wander into the mechanics of sound waves???

A friend of mine has a small studio, and to talk to him you'd swear he was stone deaf! But somehow he can still hear a "mix" better than most people. I have to admit it does get a bit loud in the control room when he's playing some of his recent projects for me. Cool

I noticed this "The trails we hit had plenty of those nasty rocks strewn everywhere. Being that the area is heavily wooded, the trails are narrow and provide little in the way of go-arounds. If there are rocks on the trails, you had better be ready to either go over them - or hit them. Therein lies the rub for ol' Rubi. The tranny pan sits low and is coupled to the transfer case skid. Throughout the day, the shovel continuously got caught on the rocks, stopping progress. Time after time, we'd get momentarily stuck. You can see in the photo above that Rubi's pan has a bit of a bow to it now. Obviously, if it weren't there, the oil pan would have a similar bow!"

This, too, was the Liberty's weak point (soft white underbelly, some would say). Jeep still does not make armor for the transmission. Serious drivers have gone elsewhere (Rusty's or Skid Row) to purchase armor for this weak point.

Yep, I sure do remember those Orange amps! We used one to track a dirty Strat rhythm part on project a few years ago. Had the mutha completely cranked to get all that nasty tone.

Speaking of high volume...

Here's a shot of my current bass rig. It's 840 watts RMS with six ten inch drivers and two compression horns. It's capable of inducing bowel movements in unsuspecting audience members...

And you can download my band MOJO's latest original recording here, if you so inclined. It's kind of heavy blues/funk, so it may not be to all tastes...

About armor for your Rubicon and other Jeeps...

I have a bunch of after market armor on my Con. I have a Tomken tie-rod/steering-box skid up front, a Warn D44 stainless diff guard, a Warn oilpan skid, and I am in the process of having a gas tank skid that's similar to the Kilby tank skid, fabbed up.

Armoring my Con has been my first mod project. The low running ground clearance of the stock Rubicon has made it a neccessity, in my opinion. My current stock gas tank skid looks like it's been through a war!

03 Rubicon, Silver, Lots of aftermarket armor.

Yeah! "heavy blues/funk" pretty much sums up my ideal form of music. This is great stuff. I'll have to order some next payday. Ever heard of "Power Blues" player Sonny Moorman? That's some good stuff too! [My son plays electric and acoustic guitar and I've been introducing him to "the classics". He convinced me to buy a bass guitar for my birthday but I can't play it yet.] Ever heard of Chris Ballew (formerly Presidents of the USA)? He's a local. We might go see him at Snoqulamie Pass tomorrow.

Re: skids.
Yeah, I had put every skid known to man on my Liberty. Now I'm starting over with the TJs.

I have not heard those artists, but thanks for listeing to our MP3 of 'Superfly'. Glad you dug it.

Heavy blues and funk are where it's at for me. Both are very bass-heavy genres, which is just the way I like it, as a bass player.

About armor...

I'm surprised more guys don't opt for front 'diff' protection. Why do you suppose that is? Seems to be a very vulnerable area, to me.

I ordered the stainless steel version of Warn's new D44 diff guard, for the Con, just for a little extra eye-appeal and 'bling-factor'. It's no stronger than the powder-coated steel item, but it should look pretty sweet down there on a silver Rubicon.

Hello All. I'm new to this board thing so bear with me if I violate any protocals. Not done by intention. I just bought an '03 Silver Rubicon. After reading Mike's article about the Rubicon needing some more ground clearance, I was wondering if anyone knows how big of a tire can get on the 16" Moab rims. I would like to go with a 285 75 16 (assume that I lift it 2"). Does anyone know if I can go this big with this rim? Thanks to all who can help.

generally you can run up to a 12.50 wide tire on an 8 inch wide rim. Isn't 285x75 a 32 inch tire? I'll be moving up to 33's and then 35's later after gears.

03 Rubicon, Silver, XD9000I winch, York onboard air, 1 inch Daystar BL, Tuffy dual overhead console, and lots of cool stickers.

Does the offset have anything to do with how wide a tire you can run? I had a TJ that I put 32" tires on and had to get wheels with a different offset because they would have been mightly close to the lower spring mounts on the rear with the stock wheels. I think a 285/75 is roughly a 33 x 11.5.

I enjoyed the write-ups on the Rubicon very much. I only just now stumbled on them but I guess better late than never.
