Hello to all, from WV! I had a quick question about the np242 transfer case on a 96'xj 4.0-AW4. I've noticed it kind of rattles when i turn the engine off and there is no mount for it to rest in on my transfer skid. Is there supposed to be a mount in there to keep it secure or does it just hang there, an inch or two above the skid plate? Maybe i need to tighten where it mounts to transmission? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you positive it is the transfercase? Sounds more like a cat converter top me. But it is your rig and you know where the sound is coming from.

the tcase mount is near the front of the case

If it wasn't there your t-case would be flopping all over the place

what do you mean by the 'front'? I can actually push it up a little by hand, it seems to just be hanging there. There is a stock skid plate just below it, looks like there should be a mount between it and tcase, but there is just about 2" space

by skid plate are you refering to the rectangular stamped steel cross member? if so then yes, there should be a mount between it and the t-case.

oh yeah, i guess its the crossmember, but there are no holes to mount anything to it, i don't think, and when looking for parts, i only see transmission mounts for sale, no tcase mounts?? I'm a new xj owner, as you guys can probably tell, so please be patient with me.....and thanks in advance!

tcase and tranny mount refer to the same thing.
It is a sandwich of metal plates with rubber in the middle. Studs stick out top and bottom to bolt it to the cross member and to the drve train.

Daystar makes a poly one, but it transfers a lot more vibration so I recommend the stock rubber one. Dealer or auto wrecker are your only options.

Ok, my transmission mount is there, it's good, but it doesn't extend all the way over to support the tcase also, it just sits under the tranny. So is there another one that goes directly under the tcase in between tcase and crossmember, or the transmission mount is supposed to support both the tranny and tcase? Thanks dudes, for being so patient with me! And no, I already had to change my bad catconverter, so i'm sure its not that.... the tcase just kind of rattles and moves when engine is turned off plus, i can push it up with my hand, pushing down on the round part that hangs, below the drain plug, maybe this is normal?

the tranny mount is it.

The entire drive train is supported by three mounts, that one and two engine mounts.

it's possible that one of those mounts is worn out and is letting your t-case move more than it should.

There is no seperate mount for the T-case. It is bolted to your AW4 with 5 bolts, its not going anywhere. If the t-case is moving seperate from the tranny... you better go tighten some bolts or your jeep is about to be in a world of hurt. As for an internal rattle in the 242.... it may be time for a rebuild. You could have a broken part floating round in there, burned bearings, or a stretched chain. Good luck. If you pull it apart and it is trashed. I have a 242 for sale for $150 in good working, soundfree order. Good luck.
