Looking to purchase an '89 4x4 XJ with 143,000 miles but it's having trouble getting past the California smog check. I've heard the '89 4.0's all have this problem and to stay away from them. Any truth to what I've heard?

The 89-91 have the Renix computer and are hard to fix because
no one knows how to work on them. They throw on new parts but do
not really fix them - so they get dirty - smog wise the biggest issue
is the cost of the repairing or replacing all the emissions elements.

Vacume lines, sensors, EGR, etc. Also that old a car has gotta have
miles on it...
